~ Demi ~
I stood outside the room door upset that my entire life was a game to the agency. I was a pawn in their never ending struggle for power and I hadn't even known it. I'm sure Selena was worried when I stepped out of the room but I needed some air. The cramped hall space on this ship was no better. Across the hall was a photo of the floor plans. I searched it, my eyes glaring over the exits and routes. If my memory severed me right, I would be able to utilize the map in my head after studying it. The infirmary wasn't far. Nick was there. It was held two floors up, off to the right. I made a mental note of it.
"Sorry about that." I croaked, walking into the room before running my fingers along my arms, sitting at the edge of the bed once more.
"Demi, you have to believe that we'll figure something out." Why did her voice have to sound so reassuring? My life was created and planned out since birth and I still didn't understand it.
"What did you find?" I pointed towards the tablet in her arms.
"Nothing. I was worried about you." Selena sighed as I laid back onto the bed sheets. The ceiling seemed slick and shiny from whatever condensation was in the air.
"Don't worry about me. I'll be fine. I want to know what that thing says." I faced the woman, her knee resting near my cheek. Her skin was scarred, but it was healing. This was my fault as well. I pressed my lips against her skin, remembering the touch of her before pulling away.
"Demi." Selena's exasperated voice soothed me. Her fingers falling into my hair before she placed the tablet into her lap and looked it over. "I typed in Nick's name."
"And what does it say?" I exhaled and inhaled with the intention of bracing for the impact of information to come. The brunette moved her hand as her eyes studied the screen. The air in the room felt thick and uneasy as my heart began to pound even harder. Selena's fingers were cold.
"Agent 800 has been compromised." She stopped.
"It's fine. Just tell me."
"This file was updated this morning. It says that agent 800 has taken an unauthorized trip to Hawaii's international airport with employee Gomez." She paused once more. I faced her before she clicked on something. Her face seemed pained as she read what was in front if her. "Employee Gomez has corrupted Agent 727. This is what we wanted and yet feared. 727 has gone rogue." Selena dropped the electronic onto the bed sheet as I sat up and pulled it away.
She was in this thing. Her file was as large as mine seemed to be. It dated back to a few months before I met her. It read that she had been hired to entice a few agents but none seemed successful. She was one of many who would soon be transferred to legitimate companies if she couldn't carry out her duties. She had known nothing of the plan but had to execute it none the less.
"Remember that promotion two years ago?" I didn't give her time to answer. "It was given because of me. Because you finally snagged an agent." I went on to read more about Selena before my own file interested me. It was too large to study and read in such a short time frame, so I skimmed to when I first met Selena in the office. It went on to say that Employee Gomez may be of interest. She seemed to have peaked the interest of 727, myself. There was so much information at my fingertips I hadn't known when to stop. Months down the line the file read that a new discovery had been made about me. I might of been interested in women which is why previous employees had failed. Hell, I didn't even know what falling for someone even meant.
My world had been closing in, my stomach churning as I tried to read on. Selena ran her fingers across mine, plucking my hands away, staying silent. But her eyes spoke volumes. I did as she wanted, placing the device in my lap.
