"727." A voice called out to me. I was cold, my body shaking as I was jolted awake by the booming voice. "727, rise!" I was but six years old. I had been living away from my parents for a year now and still I cried at night. I quickly dressed in the standard all-white uniform and marched into the hall for lineup.
"Hey." Joe, or 728 as he was called by everyone, stood by my side. "You're late."
"I was having a nightmare." I explained as he nudged me to look forward. I was just getting use to doing as I was told.
"Last night we've detected a small disturbance within some of the rooms. You know who you are. You will be moving up a class level within weeks. Do not let your night terrors run your mind." It was Joshua speaking. I had known him since I was five. I tried to follow orders as best as they were given, but I always struggled during the night.
"We have a free period today. We can learn any skill you like." Joe stood confidently next to me as I faced him. His dark brown eyes were stern and almost blank for a child.
"727!" My number was called out. I stepped away from formation and quickly saluted. "What troubles such a gifted mind." There was nothing I could say. I didn't know what he wanted me to say. Joshua studied me, his eyes shifting across my small form before he sized up Joe. I wanted to call out and say he had nothing to do with my wandering gaze but when a decision was made, it wasn't to be changed.
"728." Joshua smiled, his teeth beaming brightly over the children gazing up at him. Joe stepped to the side and saluted. "You seem quite fond of 727."
"She's my friend." Joe answered matter of factly.
"Is that so? Well friend," Joshua faced me, "the two of you shall come up and demonstrate such a bond for me." It was scary how such a man could gaze down at two children and ask for such a task to be performed. I lagged behind Joe as he stood on a large red circle. I took the blue one before we were instructed to bow. I was scared to look at Joe, because I knew that lifeless eyes would be staring back at me.
"727 and 728 shall demonstrate the first attack mission." Joshua stepped away as a small five feet separated me from Joe. He took his stance as I narrowed my eyes on his weak spots. I refused to take a stance as time was called and he ran towards me. I ducked, placing my right hand forward in order to grab his leg. He moved, his elbow getting ready to jam into my side just as I twisted away and used my leg against his. Joe went falling onto his stomach, his hands catching his fall. He quickly bounced back up as we both stood erect to face one another.
"The Agency is my God. Its creed is law..." Joe began to recite the sayings we were forced to speak everyday. I went to punch him in the gut, but he caught my hand and flipped me onto my back. The wind was knocked out of me, but like a good little soldier, I pushed my weight onto my feet just as he dived towards me. This time I caught his arm and forced it towards the ground, his face connecting with the polished blue circle on my side. I stepped back as Joe stood. We bowed and faced Joshua.
"727 and 728 are both worthy opponents. Let this be a lesson to you all. Friendships mean nothing within this line of work. But for these two, we shall set a bond. You will be bound to one another for one purpose only..." Joshua faced me, "..to carry on the legacy of the Agency."
I quickly sat up, my face dripping with sweat as Selena shifted to gaze up at me. I couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong. I was told to sleep, to relax, but I couldn't. My mind wouldn't let me.
