I was in the weight room when my captain called to me.
"Garcia! A moment."
I rolled my eyes but walked over. "Yes, Captain?"
"Here's that recommendation letter you asked for," he handed me the letter. It was short but hopefully it would get me the job.
"Thank you, captain," I turned away but he called to me again.
"You will be missed, Garcia," he said gruffly before turning away.
"Thank you, captain," I called out to him. Bullshit from the both of us. He was an old man stuck in his wayward ways, couldn't stand the idea of a woman being a cop. I couldn't stand him or his misogynistic comments. I applied at the special victims unit in New York City so hopefully I can finally get the hell out of this place. I've taken classes on counseling, hoping it gives me an advantage when they're looking over my application.-One Month Later-
"I'm so proud of you, amores," my mom hugged me tight.
"We all are," my uncle Rico hugged me next.
"Thank you," I couldn't believe I even passed the test and got the job. I was gonna be a detective! My whole family had gathered at my mom's house for this. It was half celebration and the other a going away party. I would be starting my new job as soon as I got word from my lieutenant.
"So do you have an apartment near the place?," my cousin asked as he took a seat next to me.
"Yeah, it's a few blocks away from the precinct."
"Nice are you taking your bike with you?"
"Yeah I don't want you taking it for joy rides."
"Hey, come on I'll take good care of it!"
I shook my head at him. After the party I was helping my mom clean up. She looked kinda down so I went over to her.
"Hey, Ma, what's wrong?"
She smiled at me, wiping away at her eyes. "You're leaving me."
"Aww, ma," I hugged her. "I'll be an hour away, you can come by any time."
She smiled. "I'm worried. A detective? What if you get hurt?"
"That's why I took self defense, ma. Plus I'll be putting bad guys away and stuff."
She nodded but she was still tense about it.
"You can bring me leftovers whenever you want, any excuse to come see me."
She laughed. "I will."I walked into my new apartment with the last box from the truck. "This is the last box, ma."
"Good, good."
My mom and my younger brother, Gerardo, were helping me move in.
"That lock kind of sucks so here," she handed me two new locks for the front door.
I smiled. To be honest I was glad she came prepared, so did I. I had bought three cameras for my apartment one for the front door, living room, and in the hall of the bedroom. New York is a great place but it has it's problems. While I was setting everything up my mom was putting everything away. My brother was just sitting on the couch watching videos on his phone.
I rolled my eyes at him. After setting up the locks and cameras I started working in my room. I got a notification on my phone saying that the cameras were on.My new apartment was warm and it gave me a sense of ease for my new job. My living room had a tan couch and red love seat, a number of pillows overcrowding them both. The walls in my apartment were painted a soft blue. I hung up photos and some paintings I made along the walls. A TV mounted in the living room, a soft blanket draped along the couch, a small rack by the door for my jackets and coats. A few plants along the window sill as well. My room held all of my more personal items from books to a sword I bought when I was younger. I wanted every part of my apartment to shout me, I want this place to be a safe haven for when this job becomes too much.
"So what are you doing tomorrow?," my mom spoke up.
We were eating dinner in the living room after unpacking everything.
"Well I have to go in and meet the lieutenant, they're gonna give me a small tour of the precinct and introduce me to the squad. I'll start working the next day."
She smiled. "Ooooh, let me know how everything goes."
"I will."
"Do you think I can visit you? I've always wanted to see a police station?," Gerardo asked.
"Yeah, I'll let you know once I'm settled in."After my family left I relaxed in my room. I got an email from the lieutenant stating what time I would come in and congratulating me on the job. I could feel the tension in my gut start to grow. This job was going to take a toll on me, but I am determined to help people. Help put creeps behind bars and get justice for the people of New York.
