64. Out Of Character

That night had been the end of a dynamic relationship.

YeongMi's room was no longer the center for the boys' activities. No longer did they come over for snacks, or to catch up on the latest drama - that they insisted they only watched for YeongMi and Hyjoon - and no longer did they spend their days coming up with new rules to bend and break together.

And YeongMi was no longer approachable. She was no longer making progress. She was no longer looking up. She was no longer hoping.

Hoping was a thing of the past.

It had to be.

She walked down the halls, her head higher than ever. Her face was screaming murder, and her lips were pursed in a prominent scowl. Her free hand was held in a fist by her side, and anyone who saw her coming gave her a wide berth.

But her eyes, they weren't glinting in trouble. They were empty, dead, like clouded glass orbs that had lost their colour, their beauty.

She spent her breaks smoking on the roof. She spent her time alone.

And this time, she kept her doors and windows locked. Nobody was getting in, not now.

She didn't feel bad ignoring the knocks; they stopped after a while, and she didn't let herself think about how it meant they had given up. After all, she wanted them to.

Didn't she?

She didn't let herself think about that either.

"Hey, little miss pathetic." Bora was smirking as she greeted YeongMi.

"Hi hoe, hi hoe, I'm a little busy so I'll listen to your stupid words later," she smiled rudely, "well, that's a lie. I'm not busy, I just really don't care about what you have to say."

"Oh, but everyone wants to hear what I have to say. You most of all. After all, it's about Namjoon. That peaks your interest, doesn't it?"

YeongMi gave her a strained smile. "I'd say you can choke on a dick, but that would be too good for you."

"Not everyone wants to follow your slutty lead, YeongMi."

YeongMi gasped in faux shock, "what! And all this time I thought I was everyone's hero! This is truly devastating news."

"Oh, I know it was devastating when Namjoon picked me." Bora was grinning, knowing she had hit the sore spot YeongMi couldn't cover up with sarcasm.

"Yeah, because he's such a catch."

He was, but YeongMi was doing her best to stay in denial.

"You're just a kid throwing a tantrum because you aren't the best anymore."

"Aw, you thought I was the best before? That's cute."

Bora's smirk fell; she was expecting waterworks by now. Something. Anything but this.

"What's the matter, are you disappointed in your horrendous insults? It's okay, I am too."

"Fuck you YeongMi."

"Hmm, no thanks honey."

"That's probably for the best, I heard you suck in bed."

Had Namjoon said that?

This was a trick. It had to be.

"And I heard that you're a sweet, innocent girl. We just can't trust anyone to tell the truth."

"Well, they were right about you being a bitch."

"Well, truth be told, I probably started that rumour myself."

"So you want people talking about you."

"Well, I certainly don't want my name in your ugly mouth, so not necessarily, no."

"You're such a bitch."

"Guilty, guilty."

"Too bad it won't get you anywhere. You're just going to end up a bitter, worthless little bitch."

YeongMi was getting really tired of people telling her that, regardless of whether it was true or not.

Bora should have seen it coming.

That seemed to be a common occurrence.

Her fist smashed into Bora's face, while her other hand held onto her shirt, keeping her from any possibility of escape.

This was different from the fight on the beach. YeongMi wasn't holding back. She had lost any control over her emotions; she didn't have a care left.

She hardly felt Bora's measly blows.

She ignored everything, the students egging them on, the slim few who called for a teacher, the distant tremors of disciplinary teachers yelling. She only focused on Bora, on the sound of her fists hitting her flesh, and the disgruntled cries echoing from Bora's perfect lips.

"That is not ladylike! Stop it immediately."

The teacher didn't take kindly to being ignored.

The force it took to wrench YeongMi off Bora sent her slamming into the wall.

"Yi YeongMi! Head office, now."

Uncharacteristically, YeongMi didn't say a word. She just calmly walked through the disappointed crowds, who began shifting away as the excitement died down.

Arriving at the familiar office, YeongMi took a seat without a fight.

The head of the school was Mrs. Park, a sharp woman who looked young despite her years. A pair of glasses rested on the tip of her nose, and her lips were constantly pursed, as if she was always troubled.

"Yi YeongMi, I'm not surprised."

"I was sent here, I hope they informed you."

"You are aware that fighting is not permitted at this school."

"It's generally never permitted."

"Regardless, due to your extensive record, I have to warn you, you're pushing the limits here. Despite what your parents want, I can't stand to make a mockery of my school by exempting you from proper punishment."

YeongMi didn't speak.

"What, no insulting quips? I'm surprised with you."

YeongMi only shrugged, long past caring whether she stayed or went.

Mrs. Park stared at the troubled young girl, pulling her glasses off and setting them on the desk.

"I understand that you're having trouble with the other students. Have you tried talking with them, instead of using your fists? That generally gets a much more positive response."

YeongMi stared at the wall, her lips frozen in a blank line.

Mrs. Park seemed genuinely concerned when she noticed YeongMi's uncharacteristic silence.

"Maybe we've both judged each other too harshly. Maybe I've underestimated your capacity, and you've underestimated my intentions. I am not out to ruin your individuality, or to ruin your fun. I only want to develop promising citizens who can succeed and make the world a better place. I want to help you."

YeongMi laughed; the silence was preferable, with how dreary the laugh, if it could be called that, sounded.

"You'll give up, eventually. They always do."
