40. Is It Veiled Hatred?

When YeongMi got closer to the door, she realized that the shadows were not shadows at all, but people.

One by one, the shadows became shapes, and shapes became faces.

In the center stood a very pissed off Namjoon, his arms crossed and shoulders squared to their full span.

"What happened to the party?"

"It ended hours ago. Not that you would know, because you disappeared."

YeongMi took a step back; the intensity in his tone was enough to send chills down her back.

But just as quickly as they had come, she squared her own shoulders and stepped forward, her own arms finding themselves crossing over her chest.

"I'm sorry, I didn't know you needed to be notified every time I decide to take a fucking walk."

She rolled her neck back, trying to ease the tension that shot up in her at this harsh situation.

It was as if they were facing off, two wolves passing into common territory, both wanting to be the alpha. And YeongMi would not back down. She had already let out her emotions earlier, so she was fully prepared to keep her walls up, stone hard and unmoving. She would not back down.

"When you're gone for hours, I'd say it would be a common courtesy to let someone know so we wouldn't freak out, thinking you'd been hurt. No one knew where you were."

YeongMi knew he was trying to undermine her by playing at her guilt, but she was far too angry to fall for that.

"I can take care of myself, thank you very much. Everyone else can mind their business."

"Oh, so you're saying we shouldn't be worried sick that you're not here when it's dark and late in an unfamiliar place?"

"That's exactly what I'm saying!" She rolled her eyes, glaring at Namjoon's hard gaze. "Besides, the way I saw it, you were well beyond pre-occupied when I left. But I'm so glad that after the party you're just now remembering that I exist."

Namjoon tilted his head, pulling his lips back in frustration.

Everyone else was silent, watching the two exchange words. It was awkward, and they almost wanted to leave, but at the same time, they felt frozen in place, like they just had to witness this, see what happened for themselves. It was as if nobody could move for fear of being directly brought into the situation, or worse, miss out on it.

"What is that supposed to mean, YeongMi?"

"Well shit, you're the genius, you figure it out!"

Namjoon shook his head, shaking as if he was going to explode.

Oh, and he was. They both were.

Two storms clashing into one massive disaster.

"That's rich considering you never speak clearly! Tell me, when will you ever give a straight answer?"

"Oh, don't change the subject Namjoon. This is ridiculous, you're not my family, you have no reason, no right to talk to me like this."

Namjoon laughed cruelly, narrowing his eyes at her.

"You're right, I'm not your family. Speaking of which, who are they, really? Because, for all you talk about your 'brother', nobody seems to know anything about your family. That's pretty suspicious, wouldn't you say?"

YeongMi clenched her hands into fists, digging the nails into her thighs to keep from lunging at Namjoon.

"My family is none of your goddamn business. Now, I'm warning you, back off."
