YeongMi sat on the roof. It had become her best version of a safe place at the dreaded school. She found herself letting her composure down when she was there, usually sitting on the ledge and thinking of her very own weaknesses.
Anyone who really knew anything knew that they could find her there.
She was lucky that no one did, so no one would come looking for her and happen upon the scene of her pity party. She couldnt have them knowing that she actually had working emotions.
It was a place where she could be alone, as sad and weak as she wanted, and no one would ever know.
Or so she thought.
Someone was watching from the stairs as she held the cigarette to her lips, her thumb furiously struggling with the lighter. No matter how much she tried, she couldn't get the flame to ignite.
The lighter was probably empty, but YeongMi didn't consider the logical reasons, instead bitterly cursing the world for never letting anything come easily to her. The ever present scowl that turned her into an unapproachable beast fell, and she allowed a very pitiful sigh to escape her relaxed lips.
In her frustration, she threw the cigarette to the ground, leaning her head in her hands as she took deep breaths to try, and fail, to calm herself.
She stared over the ledge, and, like countless times before, she found herself pondering her own existence in all of it's insignificance.
"You know, maybe it's a sign that you shouldn't smoke."
"Or maybe it's a sign that the world wants to ruin my life because it hates me."
"Well, not the whole world," the boy smiled a little as he stood next to her. "Maybe like, half," a small chuckle, "or two thirds, but not all of it."
YeongMi, against her better judgement, allowed herself to laugh at the sad attempt at consolation.
Maybe she didn't have to distance herself so much. After all, simple conversations wouldn't hurt, right?
Hoseok made it seem harmless.
YeongMi gave him a sly smirk, "so, do you often spend your time watching me up here?"
"Only when you're struggling," a cheeky smile, "so, yes, a lot."
YeongMi tried to be upset, but she was distracted by the way his face lit up when he smiled.
She shoved his shoulder lightly, biting her lip to hide the smile erupting on her face.
It was no use, Hoseok noticed immediately. The fact only made him smile more, and the cycle of distraction was continued.
"So, what did you come here for?"
"We've been through this, haven't we?" Hoseok's face grew serious. "I know that Namjoon hurt you, but I also know that this is more serious than that. You'd never be this upset just because of a boy, you're more than that."
YeongMi shrugged, turning away to stare at the clouds. She didn't want the conversation to turn serious, as it had, and now the gravity of it all was sinking on her shoulders, compressing her into a small ball of bitter sadness.
