"Mom, dad, you have to send me to another school."

"What are you talking about? What have you done now?"

"Please, I'm begging you."

"You got kicked out again?"

"No - "

"Then why do you need to leave? Don't you dare lie to us."

"I just can't be here anymore. I need a fresh place, where I don't know anyone, please."

"Are you being dramatic because one of your friends hurt your delicate feelings?"

"I don't have friends here! Come on, why is it such a big deal? Just send me somewhere different. New Zealand, France, Japan, I don't care. Anywhere but here, please."

YeongMi had probably never said please so much in such a short time before. But she needed to get out, not just out of this school, but this town, this country. She needed somewhere completely new, where she would never think about these desperate times, ever again. Where nothing could remind her of this moment.

"No, we won't waste more money on you."

"This isn't about money, come on."

"Why should we? That would be giving in to a child's immature demands."

Your child, not a child.

"I'm begging you."

"Why do you want to leave so much?"

"I give up, okay? I'm done. I'm tired, and frankly, I just don't care about anything anymore. So please, I'm begging you. Send me to another school, and I won't ask for anything else ever. It will be like I don't exist to you, I promise. I just need to get out of here, please."

YeongMi was ashamed to admit that she was crying. It was obvious, with her delicate, faltering voice, shaking lips altering her words in a pathetic tremble.

Maybe that's the reason her parents agreed, because they knew she was crying. Or maybe they didn't even notice. Her promise was too good to pass up. She wouldn't exist anymore to them.

"Okay. Be ready next week, we'll send a driver for you."

"Thank you," YeongMi hung up quickly before collapsing on her bed, choking back sobs.

'Don't worry, this will be over soon. You'll be gone, and you'll never go through it again. You've finally learned your lesson.'

Yes. Yes she had.
