New York and New Who?! Part 3

━━━━━━━━━

"I'm adopted, Leo." She said simply. Okay, now I'm even more confused. My dad says he wants me to meet my sister, but now she's not even my sister? What is going on here? And then he goes on and never corrects me when I say that he raised her and whatnot. If she's adopted, then what does that really mean for me?

"Did I miss something?" I ask, hoping there was ten times more to the story. This couldn't just be it. "Like is there some kind of-"

"Before you keep going. I was adopted when I was a baby." She cut in, sending me a teasing smile as she leaned in a bit more, not wanting out dad to hear what we were talking about. "My birth mom had me when she was fifteen. She gave me up for adoption, and from what I found out, she and my birth dad finally got back together. They're married now and are living somewhere else in California." I nodded, my head spinning just a bit. Shouldn't it be illegal to give someone this much information at once? Like shouldn't there be a limit so their heads don't explode?

I looked back to see ole daddy was making awkward conversation with the main waitress behind the counter. She was laughing, hoping to improve her tip. Weirdos.

"He doesn't know." Kim whispered, almost not loud enough for me to hear. I frowned and leaned in a bit more.

"What do you mean he doesn't know?" I asked. There were only so many ways I could go with this. "Like he doesn't know you're adopted and thinks your his or he doesn't know you know?" She bit into her lip to keep from laughing. Again, I'm the comedic relief. And believe me, I'm the best at it. Trust me, I'm an expert.

"He doesn't know I know." She confirmed for me. "They told me to clean out the garage for some yard sale we were having sometime last year and I found my birth certificate. It said my mom's real name, my dad's, and that I was born in Tennessee." She went on, keeping her sights set on the table as she told her story. "I couldn't believe they hadn't told me." Well, definitively didn't see this coming when I pictured meeting with these two. I had seen me sitting here while he talked about how great his life was without mom. Kim jumping in randomly and telling me what was funny about that time or laughing at the mention. Something simple. But apparently I was never meant to get anything simple. What was supposed to happen in my life was something complicated. Something people always had to explain, or something with such a twisted backstory that it took three or four times to give it to me straight. I huffed out a breath before reaching out and placing my hand on Kim's. She jumped back a bit startled and quickly looked up to me, waiting for what I had to say to her.

"At least you got me somehow. I'm pretty good company when I feel like it." I whispered teasingly, gaining a small laugh from Kim. Her eyes were watering so when our dad started to come back with three shakes in hand she jumped away from me and quickly wiped her eyes. Well now I feel bad. I was supposed to come here and hate the both of them. Now I feel bad to say I'm emotionally attached. To Kim anyways. I've always known I've worn my oh so open heart on my sleeve. Sucks, doesn't it?

"Here we go." He announced as he expertly set the milkshakes on the table.

"Thanks." I muttered as I reached out and pulled the shake closer to me, playing with the spoon sticking out of it. What if this was poisoned? You know I wasn't watching him the whole time...

"Are you two okay?" He asked as he took a seat once more and began to take a sip of his milkshake. Okay, if he got chocolate and I saw them making both of them at the same time, it should be safe.
