So, I suppose that you expect me to give some big ol' lecture on why Valentine's Day is a pointless holiday that nobody should celebrate. No. I'm not going to be that person. But just for the record I find the whole dating process stupid, so ha! Bet you weren't expecting that from a fourteen year old.
Anyway, I wanted to talk about all the reasons that Valentine's Day is amazing. Valentine's Day is not a holiday that is focused on relationships. It's focused on the meaning of love, which is something that we are all surrounded by every second of our lives. It celebrates all the little things that let you know that people care about you, and a little extra.
Now, I will admit that I am one of those shallow people who think that it's not a proper Valentine's Day without chocolate, but can you blame me? Valentine's Day is the one day of the year when I get nothing but chocolate. It's been that way my whole life. And I acknowledge that the way my mind automatically starts counting all the pieces of chocolate that I know that I'm sure to recieve on Valentine's Day is shallow and selfish of me. But I'm pretty sure that a lot of other people do it, too. They just won't admit it. (Bad, bad people. Shame on you for making me look bad for telling the truth!)
Today, I not only got every piece of chocolate that I knew I would be given, but I saw how much my friends and family care about me. Of course I know that they do, but it's nice to see it every once in a while.
Just last Friday a good friend of mine, Rebecca (y'all should check out the poems of her that I have posted on here: Where I'm from and When I go outside), was crying because she thought that my other friend, Bailey, and I weren't going to be her friend anymore. We had a very heartfelt moment to make her see that we wouldn't abandon her for the world. Lots of tears were shed that morning at school as we told each other how much we mean to each other. Because of this moment four days ago, Valentine's Day has become a much more sensitive holiday to the three of us.
A lot of people take Valentine's Day for granted. They think that it's all about relationships---who's with who; who's getting what; etc. But it's really about letting the people you love know you care and wish them nothing but the best, no matter what.
