Dear Diary,
This is one of my busiest weeks. Yesterday I went to Shakertown, Kentucky (I’ll tell you all about that in a minute); tomorrow I’m going to try to go clothes shopping with Grandma; Friday we’re going to Grandmother’s; Saturday I’m going shopping with Dad for the rest of my school supplies. Hectic, right?
Alright, now let me tell you all about Shakertown! Shaker Village on Pleasant Hill was founded by a “religious” group called the Shakers. (Before I continue with a “tour” of the town, I’d like to share what little bit of information I learned about the Shakers religion. They went to the church every Sunday at 1 p.m. They’d sit down, and wait for the “spirit” to come to them. If it didn’t, then they got up and left. If it did, then they stayed. They didn’t have a priest who would read from the Bible. They worshipped very … wildly. Some jumped around; some would sing or dance; and some would just roll around on the ground. Some would even have “visions” and report them to the leaders. Another interesting thing about the Shakers was that they believed in equality. All were treated fairly on Pleasant Hill.) I’d also like to point out that Shakers weren’t allowed to have kids. If you had kids, then you would no longer live as a family. Men had their own side; women had the other. Boys and girls, blacks and whites, all went to school together. The Shakers also were very big on keeping journals/logs. They were also big fans of being cleans and neat and organized. The Shakers were very advanced for their time, which I found most impressive.
Well, I guess this is it, old friend. I’ll miss you! But, don’t worry! I’ll try to remember to write in you some other time.
Goodbye!
Love,
Alison
