The bite of fall was no where to be seen in this place. The trees may be mostly bare and the bark a pale mask on trees, but the sun was too warm for it to be fall. Wrapped in only a sweater and my hair tied into a bun, I sat in the forest soaking up the warm weather.
My mate was off training with his father and Lana was rushing around trying to get everything ready for me to meet the pack tonight. The house was a hive of bustling bees and nerveous workers. The pack wanted this party to be as much perfect for me as I wanted it to be for them.
Outside in the forest it was quiet, calm, and I got a taste of freedom. I.... cared for Percy and his touch but the break of fresh air was welcomed. At the sound of someone hopping down from a nearby tree, I smiled.
He sat down next to me, our sides nearly touching. My lips tugged up into a larger smile as he wrapped his arm around my shoulders. It wasn't awkward with him, just like his eyes it was always warm in his presence.
Without looking at him I said," hi pony."
He wrapped me closer into his side replying," good morning Max."
After a moment of observing the pale and calm scenery I say aloud," isn't it pretty."
His chuckle vibrated through the side I was leaned against," yes but it's cold. You could catch a chill."
I closed my eyes letting my body absorb Gabe's heat. "It's not so bad, I think it's nice out."
He sighed as if giving up. "If you think so, but the first shiver you get were going back to the house."
I rolled my eyes changing the topic," why don't you have a higher rank in the pack?"
This took him by surprise,"what do you mean?"
I shrugged," it's just your an amazing fighter, your smart and your a natural leader. I don't see why you just let yourself be a lower ranked wolf." He pulled me somehow closer, more for comfort then for warmth I thought to myself.
"I don't know, I just have never desired power."
Looking up at his face I saw how his hair had been ruffled by the wind. His eyes looked slightly droopy from lack of sleep. But his features were soft and in the morning light, handsome.
"Leading isn't just about power, it's about protecting the people you love and giving others hope."
My heart skipped seeing his face break into a grin. Those pearly white teeth piercing my heart in a way that made my face blush. He patted my head thoughtfully, his voice was full of honesty as he responded," you'll make a great Luna Max."
My face fell unsure," you really think so?"
This time he smiled wider as he whispered," know so."
I blushed again, he laughed in response. Some of his chocolate locks fell in front of his eyes, his matching, deep brown eyes. I had seen quite a few werewolves, most had piercing features. Like those of predators but Gabe always had a warm appearance about him. He was a nurturer, not a hunter despite his nature. He was the kindest and bravest person I knew.
I brushed the locks out of his face, letting the sun brighten his eyes. A fire brewed in his depths, a fire that burned so passionately I don't think it could ever be stomped out. I felt him shiver from my fingers grazing his skin. His eyes illuminated to now look like sun shining through a glass of whiskey.
His gaze searched me, his body held me close like the protecter he was. I didn't realize I had said it before the words spilled out of my mouth," you'll make a great mate someday."
