Itch. My face itched. I tried to lift my arm to scratch it but pain was brought instead. I groaned out, my mouth tasting like salt, the pain was my ribs. My eyes fluttered open, I was on a beach. Just a small strip of sand and debris.
My muscles were sore, and my insides ached. "Are you ok?" A quiet voice asked. I weakly lifted my head off the sand. A chill ran across my body, I was soaking wet. My eyes caught the gem eyes of the creature that had pushed me into the river.
"You pushed me." She was crouched down on a washed up log, wasn't that uncomfortable for the knees?
Tilting her head to the side she replied," I saved you. Your scent, it was drawing more wolfys to your wolfy friend."
"My wolfy friend... is he-"
"Alive. He killed the other wolfy. Looked very upset when you were missing," her expression never changed once. Her eyes were wide and her face was blank.
"Can you take me back to him?" I croaked out.
She tilted her head further to the right,"you are a human, a hurt human. Why are you a hurt human?"
I used what strength I had to push myself off my stomach and onto my back. Relief and pain both washing over me. I breathed heavily as I spoke," well my ribs were a accident, and then you pushed me into a river."
Her eyes never blinked, but I guess that's what happens when you have gems for eyes. "Flesh," she spoke, poking my arm with her stick like fingers. Her hands, like her hair, looked like twigs and branches. Only her hands didn't have leaves and were surprisingly warm to the touch. "Humans wear flesh."
My eye brows creased, "yes we do?" I was unsure what was happening.
She hopped down from the log, she stayed in a crouched position on the sand. Just out of my reach. The bell in her chest rung as she moved. It was a sweet sound, made me think back to Christmas.
"Why are you with the wolfys?" Her voice sounded human, but her words were always hesitant as if she wasn't used to talking.
"Because they are my friends. And I should get back to them before they worry."
"Wolfy is safe. He is not looking for you. The wolfy does not worry," her gem eyes lingered on my waist. Watching me inhale and exhale, she seemed to be satisfied watching my belly rise up and down.
More chills racked across my skin, the fall air was unkind against my wet body. "What does that mean?" My voice came out raspy.
She raised her hand, the sand under my body lifting with me. Green light engulfed the sand, like a magical force was holding the sand and me up. "I will take you to the wolfy," she said. Still crouched, she hopped away, the floating sand following her. I felt like I was on a magical stretcher.
I know Gabe's alive, but the others....... my heart fell for them. It fell hard, my throat being filled with lead. More graves, more death. I wanted to be back with Percy. I wanted his tingles and his overbearing attitude. I felt safe with him, and away from him.... riding on floating sand and following a strange creature was not exactly the safest thing I could be doing.
Every time I moved it was fire down my ribs. I felt paralyzed and that didn't sit well with me. I knew by now I missed lunch and that meant I didn't take my meds. Without the painkillers and without Percy's tingles, I had nothing to ease the pain in my ribs.
After a while I was brought to a white tree. White as a rabbit in a snow storm, white. There was something mystical about it from what I could see from my back. The haze of green glow and sand hid most of the view.
