Kaneza accompanied me on my mission deep into the heart of Petersburg. After talking through things with Percy, he finally agreed to let me hunt down an immortal. Then again who knew the immortal I would find would be a Charm Speak. The enemy, the biggest threat, the stupidest of plans.
And I'm going to pull it off (Hopefully).
It was chilly in the heart of the city, all the alleys and tall buildings provided tunnels for the northern winds to pour through. We had no guards, it was just Kaneza and I, it was dangerous but Percy and his men were only two minutes away. If anything went wrong they would be there to get us out of it.
"How do you know Percy's sister?" I asked, walking through the freshly dirtied alley way.
Kaneza dipped her head to the side, inspecting the next street over. I have noticed she's incredibly cautious, quiet too. She must be a fine hunter back in her pack. "I met her at a Supreme Jr. meeting a long time ago."
Percy's sister had been tugging at the back of my mind ever since I heard Kaneza ask about her at the reunion. I couldn't help but want to understand more about the girl before the monster. "What was she like? Stubborn, dominate like her brother?" I laughed.
Kaneza swung her head back, her sharp brown eyes skimming over my face briefly. She turned her attention back to the next street saying as she continued to walk," actually, I would have said she was a lot like you."
I followed Kaneza into the street, even at dusk the city streets were quieter than usual. It made me uneasy, and based on the way she kept her hand close to her sword - it made Kaneza uneasy too. "Like me? How does someone just become so -" I struggled to find the right word, "cruel?"
I nearly lost her response to the wind but managed to just hear her reply. "No one is made cruel, we decide if that's what we want to be. My pack believes in control, and self-guidance. From what Percy explained to me about you sister, she just wasn't strong enough to stay in the light."
"But that's Percy's side of things. I'm sure Angela has her own side of the story."
Kaneza refrained from smiling, trying to keep her senses on point. "Funny how you defend a girl you stabbed a week ago."
I pursed my lips, holding my jacket closer to my shivering frame. "It was self defense."
Any humor that was on her face before had vanished with the wind. "What ever happened doesn't matter now. We're here."
At the end of the street was a sleazy looking bar. Yellow light leaked from the windows and the old wooden sign creaking in the wind. The walls were made of cream colored clay, it looked like a bar from one of those old movies.
"Remember, don't mention the war, who your mate is, or even your true name. I'll be here the entire time, just don't lose your head when we get in there." I nodded in understanding. We have to walk on eggshells, I just pray I'm ready for something like this.
When we walked through the doors no one even glanced. Many men were sprawled across the tables with provocative women in their laps. Like I expected the room smelled like cheap alcohol and permanent piss. How do people socialize like this? Kaneza followed me closely, nudging me toward one of the back rooms. I held my breath to prevent vomiting.
Behind a thickly beaded strings was a hair less man. His head was naked and his eye brows missing. His skin carried a mystical youth to it, just the sharp appearance of his crystal blue eyes made him seem ageless. Around him were women dressed in a variety of fur coats, each overly large and drooping with money.
