Mel's POV
You know, I can't help but be nervous. Grade seven is when we all start to grow up, and start to notice the other gender. I find that alone a little nerve wracking.
Grade six was different, grade six was our last year being treated like kids. We still had three recesses, and priviliges to go to the park at recess, now we stay inside during those ten minutes we would rather spend outside.
I got ready for school without Dee Dee making to much of a mess in the washroom. She usually wakes me up by jumping on my bed or something. But my Mom knew I was nervous, and I guess she decided to keep Dee out. I whisper a prayer "Thank you God"
Dee Dee is two years old and insane. All she ever does is scream and throw tantrums, she's my only sister (besides my cousins I consider sisters) and I liked being an only child. I never had to share my toys or my room. I didn't have anyone invading my space or fighting with me. It was nice, but lonely. I did long for somebody to play with (and boss around on occasion)
When I did get a younger sibling, I was too old to play the same games with her, so now I just view it as a babysitting job really. Dee Dee and I have our moments, she's just insane. Besides, when she and I fight to much I can call her by her real name (Diana) and tick her off.
I selected a blue American Eagle t-shirt and a pair of bleached jeans. I don't dress up too much, but I dress well enough. Least I don't wear sweaters all the time like some people I know *hint hint* Dani.
Speaking of Dani, I really hope she comes out of her shell this year. She really changed a few years back, and whenever I ask to speak about it, she dismisses the whole topic. She used to be really loud and funny. Now she only talks when spoken too, is super polite and hides her face behind those glasses. I hope High School changes her. I miss the old Dani. The one I knew almost five years ago. This Dani is afraid to have fun, stand out and speak her mind.
I go downstairs and make myself some toast for breakfast, my Mom wishes me luck on my first day, my Dad tells me I look like a baboon's butt *(as usual) I fire back with a "at least I'm not fat and ugly" and get ready for school. My Dad and I insult each other, but I know he loves me.
I meet up with my best friend Eileen. She's around the same height as I am, has jet black hair and small eyes. I live across the street from the school so it doesn't take us long to get there.
We're about to meet up with our friend Jason, who's talking to some of the other guys and waiting for us by the basketball posts. Before we go Eileen pushes me against the bricks of the school building.
"Umm ow?" I ask her like she's insane
"This is your year you know that right?" she says.
"What do you mean?" I ask her completely confused.
"Whether you like it or not, you and Jason have liked each other for years. I feel my cheeks go bright red at the mention his name. "This is your year to get together!" she says happily.
"Your crazy, Jason and I are just friends. Since like kindergarten"
I can see him waking over out of the corner of my eye. He's wearing a green t-shirt and a pair of jeans, his brown hair is falling in his eyes.
"Then why can I see your perfect little cheeks turning red" asks Eileen with a grin. I turn away.
"I don't-"
"Speak of the devil" interrupts Eileen releasing her grip on my shoulders.I get off the wall and take a deep breath. She winks and walks away. Making kissing faces Jason can't see behind his back.
"Hey" he says quietly. "How was your summer?"
I feel myself blush a little. Why am I blushing? "Oh, it was fun. I spent most of it at home, but my cousin's came over and you know I hung out with Eileen 90% of the time"
"Oh cool" he says with a nod. "I would've been there too, but you know my Mom and her obsession with long vacations in Florida"
It's true, he was gone all summer
"Yeah"
Before things can get anymore awkward, the bell is my saving grace. I hurry over to Eileen and another friend of ours, Devin.
Grade seven, here we come.
