Can't you see me?

Mel's POV

In the words of my dear mother "I can't believe you ditched school! What were you thinking?! I'll tell what you were thinking, nothing at all that's what!"

I was grounded for two weeks. I know Jason got pretty much the same punishment as I did, and Eileen got worse. Her parents are pretty strict, it doesn't even surprise me anymore.

I barely got through more weeks of Josie. She was constantly at my throat. She knocked over my books in the hallway, made sure no one wanted to talk to me at recess, and even "lost" my work when she collected it in class.

She's making my life a living hell, I just can't take it.

I've heard there's options, measures. That I may be willing to take.

I don't know it's stupid.

After math,(my favorite class since I'm good at it) I head across the hall to my locker with Eileen. She heads down the hall to hers. I balance my books on one arm, and turn the dial for my code.

I check my cellphone, Jason texted me.

-In case you're wondering where I am, I'm sick.

-Feel better pookie.

I laugh at my own joke, and put the books on the top shelf.

"I have a question" Eileen's voice says from behind my locker door. I had no idea she was standing there.

"Why do they give us recess in grade eight?" she asks and I shrug. Then I look over at Kyle, that freaky kid who's always super hyper.

"Maybe" I point to him. He's scratching his butt. Gross. "'Cause apes like him need play time" Eileen snorts, as we watch him run down the hallway for recess.

"We should get going" says Eileen. "Before we're associated with him" I laugh.

"Too late" sneers Josie, and Eileen rolls her eyes. "No one asked your opinion you filthy little mudblood" Eileen spits at her, and I cover my mouth with my hand to keep from snorting.

"What in hell is a mudblood?" asks Josie, and Eileen stares at her. "Get out"

"Whatever" she scoffs and sashays away. I hate when she does that.

"I thought she was dumb before" comments Eileen. "Now she's just stupid"

"Hey guys what's going on?" I ask Lydia, Mark and Ryan. Eileen and I stood together, that's how we always spent recesses. And since Jason's sick, I really need her to hang out with. Lyvia sneered at me, but then turned strangely positive.

"Oh nothing, I'm good. How are you Eileen?" I watch Eileen's eyes look into mine, then back to the three of them.

"I'm fine" she said in a small voice.

"Oh well Robby asked me out yesterday, and we're totally going out now" Lyvia smiles at her, then waves to Robby on the basketball court. He waves to her, and shoots.

"That's awesome!" I tell her. She looks past me, and right at Eileen. I look at Mark and Ryan for support, but they've headed off to the basketball court. Great.

"So Eileen, you dating anyone?" she asks, Eileen shakes her head. What am I chopped liver?

"Oh but you're so pretty! Any guy would be lucky to have you!" Lyvia gushes, and Eileen shrugs at me.

"Um thanks" she mumbles.

"Hello?" I ask Lyvia. "I'm right in front of you, can't you see me?" Lyvia looks right past me.

"Fine" I choke back a sob, and head into the school.

"Mel!" Eileen calls after me, but I ignore her. I don't care if she follows me.

"Hey you need a pass!" a teacher calls out but I just push through the door.

I can't take this, I can't take any of this. I try so hard, and I'm rewarded with everyone ignoring me?

I just want to fit in. Now that we're in grade eight it's like Mel's the biggest loser on school property.

I don't understand, I thought people liked me.

Everything I knew was a lie, I thought I had friends.

I want to be valedictorian, but how am I supposed to make a speech about my school experience if everyone hates my guts?

I kick someone's textbook they left on the floor, and watch it slide down the hall.

I couldn't figure out who I am, now that's the least of my problems. I wipe away a tear, and fold my arms. I don't know where I'm headed. I can't skip again, but I need to be alone.

The first thing I see when I round the corner is Josie with her hands on Jason's shoulders.

"Josie. I can do this....I" he starts, but she puts a finger to his lips.

"Ssh" she pulls him close to her, and crashes her lips on his.

A/N

So that happened, but this is all building up to a key moment for Mel.

Sorry the update is so short, I couldn't think of anything else to put in there.
