Danielle's POV
Well I'm proud to say I made it through the first month of high school. I did have to deal with my sister shoving me into lockers and calling me "fresh meat". But she meant it with love, I guess. It kind of hurt that one time.
I had regularly been attending Varsity Lacrosse practice and my boxing classes, I even had a big exhibition coming up. Of course I didn't tell anyone. I don't need anymore reason to stand out.
I had been spending every lunch hour eating with Kaitlin, Hayley, and Abby, until....
"You should come chill with us at lunch" suggested Lizzy in Science class one day.
I dissmissed the thought. "Oh, that's okay. I eat with Abby" I said and adjusted my glasses, I pushed them further up my nose.
I folded my arms and looked away from her. "Oh, c'mon" begged Lizzy. "High School is about meeting new people"
I could tell she really wanted me to eat with them. Why me? No one but Abby wants to hang out with me.
I sighed and turned to Lizzy "Alright fine"
She cheered and the teacher shushed us. Immediately we went back to our work, occasionally smiling at each other.
"Hey Abby" I said when I walked by her locker.
"Oh hey get this I have cupcakes for all of us to eat at lunch" She says with a smile.
"That sounds great! But Lizzy asked me to eat with her today. You don't mind do you?" I ask her.
"Oh" she gulps. "Popular Lizzy" she says and looks away from me.
"Yeah! She really wants to hang out with me" I say to her excitedly.
"That's fine" says Abby "You should know other people"
"You want to eat with us?" I ask her.
"No thanks, have fun" says Abby closing her locker.
I watch her walk away until someone's hand is on my shoulder. It scared me for a minute but I turn around and to my relief, it's Lizzy.
"Ready?" she asks me. I nodded. Lizzy links arms with me and we head to the cafeteria. She's linking arms with me like it's nothing, like we've been best friends for ages.
She's telling me about her boyfriend Garrett in the tenth grade and walking me down the hallway. This is nice, we're just talking.
We head for the cafeteria and I see her table. There's a few jocks and popular girls sitting at the table. Lizzy snaps her fingers and they all look up from their iPhones.
"Who's that?" asks one girl in a miniskirt, as if I'm just a loser lost in her popular crowd. My heart falls. I try to walk away but Lizzy grips my arm and pulls me back. "This is Danielle, She's cool" defends Lizzy.
One of the guys is staring at me , I think I recognize him from somewhere but I can't place it. He's wearing a football jersey. I look at him and his eyes dart away. Lizzy takes notice but doesn't say anything, she just winks at me. I shrug.
"Danielle" says the second of the three guys. He has red hair and blue eyes. "That's a pretty name"
"Thanks" I almost whisper.
"Sorry, didn't catch that" he says.
Lizzy sighs. "She barely speaks above a whisper"
"Okay so you need to learn names" She points to the guy with the red hair "That's JP"
The girl with the blonde hair doesn't look up from her cellphone. She just nods at me"That's Allison."
The other girl with the purple highlights and brown hair "That's Chelsea"
"Hi" answers Chelsea. I wave at her. The blonde guy's name is Terrence and the last guy with the curly brown hair's name is Will. He's the one that was staring at me. He doesn't really acknowledge me, he just stares.
Lunch was okay, they all talk about parties this weekend and getting drunk. Not really my scene. Out of the corner of my eye, I could see Abby sitting with Kaitlin and Hayley, giving them her cupcakes. I wish I could sit with them, Lizzy is nice and all but these people are obviously not my crowd.
Lizzy says goodbye to me and I head down the hallway (careful to avoid people), with a pair of headphones in. I don't need to hear what they're probably saying about me.
I shuffle over to my locker, I pull out a few books for my next class and close it. When I do, there's some guy leaning against the other lockers, clouding my vision.
"Hey" he says "I'm Will" Why is there a guy at my locker? Does he think I'm cute? Do I look okay? Wait, why do I care? Guys don't notice Danielle Jones. Maybe he needs help with his homework. That must be it.
"From lunch right?" I ask quietly. He nods.
"I just wanted to ask-" he starts but I cut him off. "For help with your homework?" I suggest.
"What?" he looks shocked. "No, I'm doing fine"
"All you jocks are the same" I say and try to shove past him, but he pushes me back.
"Please don't touch me" I whisper. He stops.
"You alright?" he asks, he sounds genuine, but I don't buy it.
"I'm fine, I'd just like to get to science" I say and take a step forward. He follows and blocks me again.
"I just was going to ask if you'd like to hang out sometime" he says.
I'm taken back by this offer. A guy wants to hang out, with...me?
"No thanks" I say shortly and push past him.
"C'mon!" he says from behind me.
"Maybe in a million years!" I shout back.
I walk through the hall past all the beige lockers and I chuckle at my own joke. I shouted at someone the hallway? And I didn't care what anyone thought! Wow! I feel amazing! Okay breathe breathe. You just need to calm down. Eee! I can't! I haven't felt this way in a very long time.
I sit through the entire class with a smile plastered across my face.
