Chapter 23:

Jessica's POV:

When I woke up, I didn't feel the warmth I felt when I fell asleep. It took me a second to figure out why: Nick was no longer with me. I looked around, but didn't see him anywhere in my room. Something on my nightstand caught my eye. I saw an envelope and on the front was written my name in familiar handwriting. It was AJ's. I opened the envelope and read the letter.

Dear Jessi,

I am so sorry I broke your heart. I didn't realize you felt that way about me. I hope this doesn't ruin our friendship. I have left for Book Of Mormon already, so you don't have to worry about it being awkward between us. I hope that when I come back, we can go back to the way things were before yesterday. You are like a sister to me, and I love you.

Love, AJ

I felt tears slide down my cheeks as I read. Flashbacks from the day before flashed through my mind, and I let my tears stain the letter.

I heard the door open, and looked up, rubbing my eyes to stop the tears. It was too late, though. Nick had already seen them.

"What's wrong?" He asked, rushing over to give me a hug. I silently handed him the letter. "You just need to forget about him. You deserve much better." He said after reading the paper.

I nodded, not wanting to talk about AJ anymore. "What did you come in here for?" I asked.

"I was just checking to see if you were awake." Nick answered.

"What time is it?"

"10."

"What?!" I suddenly sat up. "Rehearsals started two hours ago! Why didn't you wake me?"

"You had a rough day yesterday. And anyway, you deserve a day off. You've been working really hard, and you know all your lines and cues really well." Nick explained.

"Thanks. But shouldn't you be at rehearsal? You did co-write Twisted after all."

"Matt is there. And don't I get a break too?" He asked with a pouty face.

"I guess." I said sarcastically. "What's that amazing smell?"

"Oh! I almost forgot! I made you breakfast. Stay here. I'll be right back." I did as I was told as Nick left the room.
