Vincent stopped.

Something was wrong.

Matron, or Jess as the girl had come to call herself, had her hand reaching out toward him.

But the gesture wasn't aimed at him, that was for sure.

Her eyes were focused on something just in between him, something he'd almost failed to realize had moved in front of them too.

Matron, the original one.

Matron's form was shimmering, the outline of her form disfiguring itself and undoing into a glow.

And Jess became coughing.

It was retched at first, but gradually descended into short spluttering.

"Heh...heh..." Jess spat out, glaring upward.

That voice...

It wasn't Jess, nor was it Matron.

It was...both.

It was as if Matron and Jess were rehearsing a duet, in perfect sync and no imperfections in the speech.

Amber, rich and lustrous was slowly gaining a crystaled green.

Flecked and speckled with many flavorous shades of enchanted green shades.

It was like fire enveloping a leafy forest.

"You wanna kill me?" Jess's voice rang in his ears. "You'll have to get through US."

Aphmau's head felt...light.

But it was a nice kind of light.

As if a huge pressure that had been weighing on her head was finally raised.

Granted, its presence was still there. It wasn't entirely gone. Things like that don't just disappear.

But at least it wasn't weighing her down anymore.

She looked down at herself.

At themself.

What she saw surprised both of them.

She expected the purple outfit, the haunting cosplay similar to her father in a mock sense to hurt her.

She expected the blood to drip, the shaking hands caused by frayed nerves, the pitch blackness of being trapped every time she'd merged or let Matron in control.

Instead, it was like she was an entirely different person.

Her outfit was still purple, that hadn't changed, but it was a lighter shade, more clean and lilac.

The same shade she loved.

She felt Matron's own satisfaction at the color flood through her.

It was also a security guard's outfit, but a shining golden badge stood in place of the previously steel, dull one.

Something fell her face.

A teardrop.

Tears of happiness.

"Wow." Matron stretched her-no. Their arms.

"This feels much better." Aphmau hummed aloud.

A slice of hair fell in her face.
