Aphmau could try to explain what happened.

She really could, but words wouldn't help settle the stirring in her.

Leaving the crystal like a charm on her bedside, she looked to the sky.

The rooftop was a nice place to be.

"Heyo!"

Whirling, her shoulder relaxed when Travis's bright face appeared.

"Travis!" She exclaimed, patting the ground next to her excitedly, motioning for him to sit.

"That's me." Travis winked, taking a spot. "I figured you'd be somewhere around here."

Aphmau gave him a curious look

"We've been friends since highschool Aphmau." Travis deadpanned. "You once told me you liked places up high to clear your head."

"Huh...I did." She said.

"Yeah." He said. "Actually, I wanted to find you."

"Really now?" Her eyebrows waggled.

"Yeah, I mean, unless you wanted to be alone-"

"No no no." Aphmau grinned. "I mean, I did come up here for quiet but, it'll be nice to have some company."

"Alrighty then." Travis shifted around on his spot.

"So, what did you want to talk to me about?" Aphmau asked.

"Well uhh..." He looked at her. "I noticed something a little different about you earlier."

"Oh, like what?" Aphmau asked, genuinely confused.

"Not about the way you acted-" Travis shook his head. "Your aura."

"Aura?"

Vague studies of magic from previous school years were reigniting in her memory.

"That's uhh, somebody's magical presence, right?"

"Close." Travis said. "An aura, like it's name suggests, is one's presence in the world, that can be used for magic yes, but it's mainly the feeling around a person. Example, somebody could have a safe aura, an intimidating aura, a suspicious aura-"

"Huh."

"Tell me, do you feel auras around certain people?"

"Well yeah, I just didn't know the correct term I suppose." Aphmau shrugged. "Like, Aaron's got this really protective aura that's kinda mysterious, but also super friendly! Katelyn's aura is fierce and all 'tough' but she's actually a big softie-"

"Yep-" Travis cut her off, chuckling. "Katie's aura is certainly one of a kind."

"Speaking of Katelyn..." Aphmau gave him The Look™.

"What's that look for..." Travis said, sweating.

"You know...." Aphmau nodded her eyebrows up and down. "How's it going, y'know, with your relationship and all..."

Travis was blushing. "NONONO. That wasn't part of this conversation!"

"Puh-leeze Travis, I'm the one that got you the girl, you could tell me at least a few details."

Travis sharply inhaled. "Boi."

Aphmau gave him kitty eyes.

Travis sighed.

"I have to thank you for convincing her though, but so far? It's been going great! I'm happy she's given me a chance after so many years of pining."

"You guys are cute together, I'm happy for you." Aphmau responded, eyes shining.

"Back to auras!" Travis said quickly, dodging a bullet. (Metaphoretically of course.)

"Oh, right!" Aphmau chirped.

"Your aura changed recently Aphmau."

"Really now?" Aphmau tried to act surprised.

"Maybe you've noticed already." Travis raised an eyebrow. "Maybe not...but it is different now."

"Auras can change, then?" Aphmau asked.

"Yes, it's uncommon for somebody's aura to remain the exact same through a lifetime. Some people who study the language of auras can distinguish the tiny changes in people's auras. Life experiences, change in environment, and stuff like that can change an aura."

"Wow. You know a lot." Aphmau commented.

"I took a few classes and read a little bit." Travis shrugged. "I've always found it fascinating!"

"It is!" Aphmau nodded. "What's my aura changed to then?"

"Auras are hard to explain when they change." Travis said. "Let's uhh, say this. Your aura used to be really warm. It kinda reminded me of caramel, sweet with the right foods and nice!"

"I've never been compared to caramel before, but what changed?"

"I can't really say, but it's not pure caramel anymore, it's like peppermint mixed in. Minty."

"The fact that your using foods to describe a sixth sense thing is somehow making sense to me and it worries me." Aphmau laughed, but the description was oddly satisfying.

"It's weird right?" Travis nods with a chuckle. "But...what concerns me is how abrupt it was."

Aphmau's expression darkened.

"It changed...the day you woke up." Travis said, wincing. "I was scared y'know, when somebody's aura changes so drastically, there's often symptoms of personality change as well. Yet you seemed fine. It's really..."

"Strange? Odd? I can see how that would be an anomaly." Aphmau shrugged.

"Yeah, but..." Travis stared at her.

She stared back.

Staring contest initiated.

"I see." Aphmau took the time to purse her lips in a slight pout. "You want to ask me if anything happened to me that I know of without sounding insensitive or something like that."

"You read minds." Travis awed.

"To be honest...I actually don't know." Aphmau admitted.

Travis gave her a blank look.

"I have my suspicions." She said vaguely. "Some theories, but I can't be sure, y'know?"

Travis gave her a blank stare, and for a second, his green eyes vaguely intimidated her as they darkened for a mere second.

His bright flower green gaze was back so quickly, she would've thought she'd imagined it had not her confidence in her sight been so strong.

"I also don't know if telling you is something I can do."

She didn't miss the flash of hurt across his face.

"Yeah..." Travis gazed softly off, a troubled frown on his face.

"For what it's worth though." Aphmau said. "I'm still Aphmau, I haven't changed a bit. I don't know auras as well as you probably do, but I really am still me."

"I believe that." Travis said. "But do tell me if something happens?"

"I will." Bitter guilt was rising in her. Maybe she should tell him-

"I'll see you?"

Travis waved half-heartedly and walked away.

Aphmau would've slapped herself, but she didn't have the heart to do that.

"I'm sorry." She whispered to nobody. "But there's something I still have to do."

The new information of auras was an enlightenment to say the least.

"Matron."
