This is a topic that has been switched around and also confusing at times. Washing your hair is a lot more important than people give it credit for. It's also a part of self care just alike taking a shower or brushing your teeth.
Washing your hair is about cleansing your scalp as well as your hair strands.
Everyone can do it typically but I'm gonna try and generalize what you would do and give some tips on what I do.
So I wash my hair in the shower, it's just easier considering the amount of hair I have. You can also do it in a sink but something in my mind makes it seem like washing your hair down is better for getting dirt out.
Using warm water is BEST for washing hair.
I would start off by just running the water through my hair for a minute or two. Just to see what I can get out on my own. Then when I feel I have gotten as much of the dirt or product out of my hair as I could, then I would go on and get shampoo.
You should get whatever shampoo works best for you. This can take a while to learn if your just starting out. I'd prefer to use sulfate free, because honey that dries the mess out of curly hair. I love love love Shea Moisture but that does cost a little more than what typical products do but it's one of the best companies out there (for me, again EVERYONE ISN'T THE SAME!!).
Now, you should put the shampoo ONLY on your scalp. It'll run down your strands when you wash it anyways. Now I'm gonna say this right now, you don't need to use shampoo every time. You DON'T!! I didn't believe it at first but it made a big difference. I have a lot my oils in my hair due to the change.
For conditioner, I use this every single time I wash my hair. Conditioner is about moisturizing hair, putting into your hair support for your hair to be moisturized. Try to get this in every strand. Combing through it with your fingers ensure you coat each strand. This is probably when your hair looks best to you especially if you've never done it like that before.
A good way to make sure that the conditioner works to the best of its ability is by using heat or generating heat. So I used a plastic grocery bag, just because when I learned this technique, I saw her use that too and I have an abundance of those at my hair.
I honestly don't know what else you can use unless you you by they fancy one that your just put a cap on and flip a switch, but I don't have money for all that. 😂
I usually let it stay on my head for as long at it says. A normal conditioner, its about 2-3 minutes, or if it's a deep conditioner (which is a whole-nother story, but long story short, you can use that once in a while for extra help and moisture.), about 30 minutes.
For me when I first did it this way, I was contemplating whether to wash it out or not. Well, a really good conditioner would leave your hair soft and moisturizer anyways. Then I make sure to wash it out while detangling as well.
That's just about what I do to my hair. Some people may be different because everyone is different. That is the basis of everything though.
