🗣 Representation DOES Matter

This is extremely important, so much so in two ways I really wanna talk about.

First, I wanna say that the "role models" presented today are .. not so representable. Talk about the disrespect, the ignorance, violence, etc. Improper representation leads to improper impressions. If we continue to uplift people unfit for being put on a pedestal. If puts false images upon the impressionable (A.K.A. - young children). They may think act negatively to get the things you want and that a biiiggg NO.

NEXT, the one the picture represents. So I'm gonna straight up with dolls. I am 15. From a little age, I have had either white dolls or black dolls with straight hair flowing from their scalp. So two things were impressed in me.

1. My skin is not the right complexion. I am too dark. I would imagine some miraculous cure to my brown skin. If you think it not that serious, honey, are you kidding me?

2. My hair isn't straight enough. I would hope my mom would one day let me get a relaxer. To this, I am thankful to God, my mother would say no. She was definitely ahead of her time.

This was deeply instilled into me with media. On the shows I watched, everyone wanted to lighter skinned people. Darker skinned people were marginally portrayed in manners not so appealing. I honestly think I hated the beautiful color of my skin. I definitely assumed that the lighter you were the better.

Even in recent years, still being brainwashed. The girls that are praised are lighter. If you are of a darker complexion with a booty, you may be okay but other than that, you are nothing compared to a white girl, Hispanic, Asian, or even a mixed girl. That's all I was being fed and still am. The thing is, I'm not as impressionable as before.

To the younger POC, we need people that they, we, can look up to because even today it happens like it did, 10 years ago, 15 years ago, 30 years, 50 years ago, 100 years ago, 300 years ago, even 10,000 years ago and beyond.

And I will end with a question ..

Do you have anyone of good representation to you?

love,

black girl ki.
