This was the first time in both Magnus and Alec's lives that this was happening. It was scary, and somehow a milestone for the couple. They were going to a pride rally, a parade.

Alec was so scared to the point he hid under his and Magnus' bedsheets and refused to come out. Magnus had to coax him out of the silk mess with the promise of chocolate chip pancakes and kisses. They'd have to go to the institute later on to get ready, and the whole thing was slightly frightening. Sure, everyone in the institute and in Idris knew about him being gay and loving Magnus, a downworlder, but he doubted he was ready for the mundane world to see him that way. He'd heard about what happened at the Pulse bar, and that scared him enough.

"Alexander." Magnus hushed as Alec paced around on the floors of the loft, panicking. When Alec showed no signs of stopping, and when Magnus saw Alec's eyes going all weird from being dizzy he gripped his arm and turned the shadowhunter to face him. "Alexander, my dear. It's scary I know. We won't go if it panics you that muc-" "No, Magnus. I want to go." Alec cut Magnus off, and looked at his boyfriend who was smiling softly. "You sure?" Magnus touched Alec's cheek. "Yes. I'm very sure, Magnus." Alec picked up a rolled pancake and shoved it into his mouth. Magnus choked on laughter and hastily wiped a drop of golden syrup falling down Alec's chin, and sucked the sweet sauce from his thumb. Alec blushed pink.

"Let's go." Magnus took Alec's hand and they left the loft together.

On the way there they saw people setting up balloons and stalls and all sorts of different things. They saw people lining up to help, and people lining up to protest. Magnus shielded Alec from the negativity and pulled him past the placard-holding idiots. When they'd finally gotten to the institute they noticed it had been decorated too. Rainbow streamers and decorations hung from lampposts and when they got inside they were hung from the rafters. People leaped out and popped confetti at Alec and Magnus. 'People' being everyone in the building.

First in line to see Alec was Isabelle, and Raphael was lurking behind her. Not menacingly, but just there. "Alec! We need your outfit!" She yelled, and pulled Alec to his old room in the institute. All he had was either shadowhunter gear or jumpers. Isabelle huffed. "Let's go to Jace's roo-" "Izzy I'm fine in this shirt." Alec cut her off and directed to his black tee he was wearing.

Raphael jumped in.

"We can't let him wear that! Por el amor de dios!" He exclaimed, and Isabelle glared at him. "Well Raphael no one wears a suit to a pride rally!" She retorted. "I've seen multiple people in pride rallies wearing suits, actually." He prodded Isabelle's chest, and she gasped. "How dare you!" She prodded him right back. They started poking each other and Alec got annoyed.

Alec left them to it and went to Clary who was face painting anyone who wanted it. Magnus was nowhere in sight.

Clary pulled Alec opposite her and washed her brushes. "Rainbow?" She asked, and Alec simply nodded. She set off to work and after a while Alec slouched, making her go off her course. "I'm gonna need you to stand a bit more straight, Alec." She smiled, and Alec choked on what he just thought of as a reply. "You know I'm not very good at that, Fray." And at that Clary burst into fits of giggles. She wiped the smudged part of Alec's rainbow and started that part again, not being able to control her laughter.

Alec smiled to himself, and ruffled Clary's hair when she'd finished. "Thank you, Clary." He'd said before walking away.

He got to where everyone was sitting and eating the party food that was set out. He felt arms around his neck and someone tie a garment around his neck. He turned and saw Maryse, his mother. She smiled at him. That's when Alec realised what she'd put on him. A gay pride flag. She'd given him a cape made from a gay pride flag. He pulled her into a tight hug. "I'm so, so proud of you Alec." She said, and Alec kissed her on the cheek. "Mum. Thank you. You have no idea how much this means to me." Alec smiled. "Where's da.. Nevermind." He cut himself off, looking down at the floor. Maryse patted him on the cheek. "It's his fault he's not here, it was his choice. His views on who you love don't matter. I wasn't very sure at first, but I realised that you love Magnus. There's nothing wrong with that." Maryse reassured her son and Alec nodded, blinking back tears that he had no clue were there.
