Song ~ Allman Brown - Between The Wars
~
Magnus and Alec had cared for Rafael and Max for a good two years now. Max was two and a half years old, and Rafael was four and a half. The two dads couldn't be any happier. They didn't have a specific routine, they got up of their own accord in the middle of the night to check on the boys, they fed them and changed them when they saw fit, and they loved them with all their hearts.Alec was in another meeting. Another meeting with the Clave over something stupid. He listened to them drone on, more dazed than anything else. "Alec, what are your views on Raphael's clan coming to sit on the downworlder council?" One official said, and Alec looked up at her, shrugging his shoulders. "I don't know if he'd agree to that, he doesn't like to mess around in shadowhunter affairs." He spoke tiredly. He wasn't actually tired, just thinking about Magnus and the two boys. "Well he seemed to mess around in shadowhunter affairs with your sister, did he not?" The official said, and Alec's eyes on her became steely.
"Don't you dare bring my sister into this. Now I apologise but I have a husband at home and two children to tend to." He stood from his seat, and a wispy white cloud appeared above his head. Everyone seated stared at it, and gaped when a little blue boy jumped out and into Alec's arms. He caught him, like it was a reflex, and mock saluted before walking out. "Knew it wasn't a good idea for Magnus to start teaching him magic." Alec whispered, holding Max to his chest. "Daddy.." Max babbled, and Alec smiled down at the boy.
Through the walk to the loft, Alec's eyes were other trained on the roads or on Max. He was walking slow, and took his time. He did want to get home to Magnus and Rafael but at this point he was admiring the city. Sure it was hazy with smoke, and filled with all types of people, and smelt bad in certain parts, but this was where Alec lived, and he could deal with all the bad stuff if it meant he got the good stuff too.
When he'd gotten back to the loft, he heard soft music and kicked his shoes off at the door. He peeked around the corner of the hallway and saw Magnus holding Rafael in his arms, swaying to a song that Magnus was humming and Alec didn't recognise. Rafael was a toddler now, and yet still looked so small when being cuddled by Magnus. "Mags?" Alec called out, and the warlock turned dramatically to him. Alec trod barefoot to where his husband was, pressing a gentle kiss to his lips before remembering what happened earlier at the meeting. "You teaching little blueberry how to make mini portals was a bad idea, Mags." He hummed, tickling Max's tummy.
"Quite on the contrary, Alexander. I got you home quicker, did I not?" Magnus smiled against Alec's lips, and looked down at the two children. Alec sighed happily. "You did." Was all he said. Both men fed the children, with minor difficulty of course. They had argued playfully over what to feed them. Alec had chosen spaghetti bolognese, Magnus had chosen glittery jelly. They'd made a deal, and the kids would have the jelly after the spaghetti. Alec swore Magnus' extravagance would be the death of him.
After they'd changed out of their clothes, and changed the children into their pyjamas, they had put the babies to bed and laid together in their own. Well, they'd sat up. This is what their nights consisted of now. Kissing each son on the forehead and cuddling up to each other, mumbling about how lucky they were to have the other. Alec pulled Magnus into his lap, and the two wrapped their arms around each other. "Magnus.." Alec hummed, and looked at Magnus. His cat eyes were glinting in the darkness, and Alec could see his own blue eyes reflected in the swirling gold. "Yes, Alexander?" Magnus breathed out, and pressed their foreheads together. "Look how far we've come, who we've become." Alec smiled in disbelief, and Magnus just smiled back.
"We got married, we have these beautiful sons, and I've never felt as happy and in love as I do now, my dear." Magnus lilted in a quiet whisper. Alec moved a hand from Magnus' back and carded it through his hair, feeling the soft strands slink through his fingers. Magnus leant into the gentle touch. "I love you, Magnus.." Alec whispered, and saw Magnus' face light up like it did the first time he said it. "You better do, Alexander." He laughed, and felt Alec's hand pull slightly on his hair.
"You were meant to say 'I love you too' Magnus." Alec had a soft smile on his face, one that was barely even able to be seen. Magnus noticed it though. Then they were kissing, lips as soft as ever, small sighs and breathing into each other's mouths, hands in hair, hands on faces, hands anywhere they could get them to show each other how in love they were. They'd not even bothered to pull away when they laid down on the soft pillows, and their lips remained together. Alec felt Magnus mouthing 'I love you' into the kiss, and wondered. He wondered what on earth he did, what amazing feat he'd accomplished to deserve someone as amazing and beautiful as who he was kissing right now, who he had married, who he'd adopted children with. Magnus' hands traced Alec's face, ran across his cheeks, pressed into his cheekbones. His thumbs ran over Alec's closed eyelids, and they exploded with colour, with glittery watercolour paint that danced across his line of vision. The random splatters of colours danced till they became figures, people.
"Alexander." Magnus breathed, and felt his husband sit up to straddle his hips. This wasn't a rushed kiss or action, it was gentle one, a beautiful one. Magnus didn't feel excited, he felt tired, and so much in love with Alec. Alec's hands were still in Magnus' hair, his fingers grazing the nape of his neck, his thumbs touching Magnus' cheekbones. They ended up laughing after a while, and shushing each other between chuckles and small kisses. They'd bumped noses, and it was such an innocent thing. "You're going to wake the boys." Magnus had smiled, and Alec looked at him with an eyebrow raised. "I'm going to wake the boys? What about you, sleepy giggles." Alec pecked Magnus on the lips and felt him smile just a little.
Alec kissed Magnus off-centre, his lips touching the corner of Magnus'. Magnus tilted his head back, and felt Alec's lips on his jaw, on his neck. Alec slid his hands down to Magnus' collarbones, and thumbed at the soft skin there. "I love you, Magnus Bane." He murmured against his throat. "I love you, I love you, I love you, I love you so, so much." Magnus could feel Alec's breathing, and daren't say anything in return. Alec's hands moved down to settle on Magnus' sides, and the warlock hummed at the ticklish spot that Alec had his hands on.
"I love you, Magnus. I really do. I love your stupid face, and your hair, and your pretty smile, and your clothes, and your voice, and your warlock eyes, and your lips, and your neck, and your collarbones, and your chest, and your hips, and your thighs, and your legs." Alec listed it all, and thought he heard Magnus smile, that soft sound of lips curling up at the corners. "Even I can't explain how much I love you.." He shifted back up to where his husband could see his eyes. "Alexander.." Magnus ran one of his hands up Alec's face, and his thumb pulled Alec's lower lip down. Magnus brought Alec's face down to his, and started on kissing every millimetre of his face, from his hairline down to his jaw.
"No amount of gifts or kisses or words can explain how much I love you, Alexander. You, my dear, are a supernova. You're a burst of colours, an everlasting rainbow, you're beautiful. More like a spectacular sight for everyone. And I can't even start to tell you how lucky I feel to have you here." Magnus whispered against Alec's face, and rested their foreheads together.
Neither sighed, neither groaned when the sharp sound of crying cut through the deep silence of the night. Alec mumbled an "I'll get them." Against Magnus' lips and climbed off of his husband. Magnus watched as Alec padded to the cots, and peered over the tops to where their two children were staring up at him with their big eyes. Alec swept both into his arms, and Magnus noticed that no matter how big they got that Alec would always hold them like delicate flowers, like they were made of glass. Alec bobbed both children on his hips, and hummed as they started to cry again. "Look at you two all sleepy and hungry, want some milk?" Alec murmured, and kissed the tops of both of their heads.
Magnus stood at the doorway of the bedroom and stared into the kitchen at Alec who was pouring milk into two bottles and placing them in the microwave. He smiled at his husband looking that beautiful all the time, cradling their two sons in his strong arms and talking to them. He heard Rafael's chirpy voice, and couldn't make out what he said, but heard Alec reply, and smiled. "Daddy is in bed, Raf. You want to stay with us? Me, you, daddy, and Max?" And Magnus held in a chuckle. The warlock swept himself into the kitchen and pulled Rafael from Alec's arms. Alec ruffled his husbands hair, and handed him a warm bottle of milk.
That's how they spent the next twenty minutes. Feeding their children, finding time to sneak in kisses and gentle words of care before they went back to bed. And with that they laid together with their two sons, stroking hair, kissing fingertips, kissing heads.
