The parking lot is empty once we finally make it home. The sound of Harry drumming on the dashboard has been steady throughout the ride, and has helped to take my mind off of what tonight may be.
I turn off the ignition and the silent night turns deafeningly silent until Harry's the first to speak up.
"This is where you live," he ponders slowly.
I nod my head.
"And you live alone?" he continues in awe.
"No, I have two other roommates, Kate and Alex, both of whom we should try to avoid tonight. They both went out a while ago, so the house should be empty."
"What did your parent's do again?" He unbuckles his seatbelt, curiosity peaking.
"Business and medicine," I answer, coating their professions. I don't want him to judge me based on my parent's annual income. Or to treat me any different. I'm not always supported by them; I don't have a car.
In the past, when I've given up their professions it has changed my relationships. It has shown me who are my real friends and the ones that are just there for the free ride.
Also, he already believes that I'm a stuck up know-it-all. There's no reason to add more fuel to the fire.
"Okay."
Walking in, the house is completely dark. If I didn't live here myself, I wouldn't have known the place was occupied. But I do.
The shutting of the front door lets me know that Harry is in as I remove my wet shoes and place them on the mat beside the counter.
"I'll be back," I say making my way upstairs.
"I'm coming with."
"Why?"
"Parker, you are utterly absurd if you think that I am going to wait down here, in the doorway, for your return," he says, his low voice cold.
I say nothing as he follows suit with his shoes. Exhaling, I head upstairs to Alex's room for clothes. His room is surprisingly spotless upon entry. Kate's work surely.
Shuffling through his drawers, I grab some sweats and a black tee. I'm sure he wouldn't mind.
"So long as he doesn't know who's wearing them."
The little annoying yet correct voice causes me to roll my eyes involuntarily. I don't know how I'm going to tell Alex about this. He has so much contempt for the boy.
"Socks?" I ask, giving him the clothing.
"I'm fine."
"There is a bathroom in here or a bathroom down the hall. Both should have what you need to get cleaned up," I start. Showering has yet to cross my mind. Obviously, he is going to have to in order to get fully clean.
I shift uncomfortably, burying the thoughts.
Why must this happen to me?
"I'm guessing towels will be supplied as well?" he smirks, taking pleasure in my uneasiness.
"No, actually. Here," I reach around him, pardoning myself, to open the cabinet filled with towels. I give him two.
"Thanks," he proceeds, walking into the guest bathroom.
I stay there for a minute or two shocked. I can't help but think that this was all some systematically planned stay to embarrass me. He seems to take pleasure from my constant humiliation. The sound of water turning on breaks me out of my stupid thoughts.
