The human race's reproduction rate dropped in 2093. It didn't just decrease, or even come back up after that year. The rate just plummeted because females couldn't get pregnant as easily as before.
Birth control pills and shots, diseases- sexual and otherwise- illegal drugs, inbreeding all ruined the natural reproductive system. When women got abortions, some of the doctors had begun to tear their uterus so they'd never make the mistake of another child. Less and less children were being born, meaning the human population was beginning to drop at an all time low.
In 2180, the human population was bordering on only two billion people, only a small fraction of them were children.
Finally, in 2210, a scientist(he preferred Alchemist) introduced the 'Alpha and Omega project' to the public.
Healthy teens just graduated high school will be selected. Once selected, you are put into the project to be either an Alpha or an Omega.
Being either and Alpha or an Omega was not reliant on your gender or even sexual prefference.
After going through a week-long test the project puts you through, you are told whether you are an Omega, or an Alpha. Typically, smaller, weaker people were Omegas while bigger, stronger people were Alphas.
Alphas are the family caretakers. They get a job to pay for the family. They're the providers and protectors. They impregnate the Omegas.
Omegas have to stay at home. They clean and cook, unless the Alpha decides to take over. They bear the children, despite gender.
The ones that aren't selected for the project are automatically Betas.
Once your secondary gender is selected, you're brought to a room, hooked up to machines, and then that's when you become an Alpha or Omega. After weeks of transformation, you're tested once again to have your mate selected for you.
Only a select few people could choose their own mates, and those were the rich people who paid a little extra.
Following mate selection, you are provided a house, the Alpha is tested to see which job they are compatible for, then set to work.
That's where their life then begins and are encouraged to have as many children as possible.
Now, in 2302, Keith was sure as hell that he was going to be selected as an Alpha. He was a little on the short side, but he was strong and quick and protective. He was serious, but could smile an crack a joke. He wasn't the best at cooking, but it wasn't bad, and he never cleaned for shit. His poor omega would be doing that themselves.
But, if by the off-chance he is selected as an Omega, he'd want to be Shiro's Omega. There is no way that Shiro wasn't going to be selected as an Alpha. He was big, strong, gentle, but fierce and protective. He was smart and so very kind. Everyone in the senior class called him 'dad' or even 'daddy.' They have been for years.
The short teen had it all figured out. He's an Alpha. He'll have a pretty mate, work as a fire fighter, and have three kids running around with a cat or two. If he's an Omega, however, he'll gladly settle down with Shiro, bear however many fucking children his Alpha wanted.
