Rubix

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It had been 3 days. 3 days and not even a letter from his mom, James was a little worried now about what his mother was doing. Mrs. Cameron had gladly offered for James to spend the night at the orphanage until his mother returned. James was currently sitting just outside the building on one of the stone steps, flicking through a math problem book.
You would think a boy his age would prefer a comic book or the latest action figure that costed goodness knows what, but James was perfectly happy to get his head stuck in a book. Speaking of books, it had also been three days since James had seen Rubix. Where was he? Did he get adopted?
He closed his book and stood up from the step, walking his way down the path. He wasn't sure where he was going, but he was going somewhere. He didn't really worry too much about strangers, his mother was well known through the town and many people had gotten to know him.
Mrs. Cameron knew about his daily walk about, so she wouldn't worry, as long as he was home in time for lunch. He walked and walked, not really walking to anyplace in particularl, just a casual walk around the town.
He was passing by what he thought to be a normal building, but the slow creaking of the door caught his attention and he turned his head. The back door to the building that lead into an alley had slowly creaked open. How did that happen? The wind perhaps?
James stood their, pondering on what to do for a moment, he shrugged and started to cross over the road. It wouldn't hurt if he had just a tiny peak? Would it?
He made his way to the door and slowly peered in, the door lead into a long hallway. H slowly walked in, he hadn't even taken three steps before the food slammed shut behind him
SLAM
"AH!!" James sighed when he realised it was hurt the door, and he began his way down the corridor. The hallway had a tan carpet on the floor, the walls were painted in a light blue, with white clouds and a huge sun with a smiley face. This must be some kind of kids hospital, he thought.
Another thing that caught his attention was how run down it all looked, the paint was chipped and flacking off the wall in some places and the many doors in the hallway were rotten and half way to falling off their hindges. "I don't remember coming across a building like this before....."
SNAP
He jolted and snapped his head to the sound of something breaking, he edged his way closer towards another hallway, he peered his head round to corner, to his relief, no one was there. "PHEW!! Well....that was...weird."
In the room was a grand stair case, must lead to the first floor. He was about to make his way towards them when the same sound was heard again.
SNAP
He froze. He slowly turned his head to his left, a small door that nearly went by unnoticed by him in the far corner of the room was open. That's funny? He thought
'I don't remember seeing that door open when I came in....'
A part of him wanted to leave the building like a startled cat, but his curiousness once again gained control and he started to walk towards the door. When he came to the door, it lead down to a flight of stairs, they went down for quit some time as he couldn't even see the bottom, or maybe that was just the lack of light.
He made his way down the steps, the sound of boot on metal echoed around him and it only made his fear grow, but he still continued. When he finally reached the bottom, after god knows how many stairs, he finally reached a long hallway.
The hallway was dark and the only light was a small flickering light that hung loosely from the ceiling. The hallway had large glass windows, on the other side of the glass was a large room that was entirely made of what looked to be pillows. Their were at least five of these room son each side of the wall and another door at the end of the walkway, possibly leading into a similar room.
He walked his way down the hallway, "Is this and asylum?....." he pressed his head against the glass, the room looked empty. He hummed in thought and pulled his head away from the glass, as he did he noticed the vague dark silhouette of a figure behind him.
He turned round full speed, only to find that their was no one. "What?..." he scratched his head, was this asylum haunted or something? "Huh?" A coloured object lying next to one of the glass windows caught his attention.
"Is that?..." on closer inspection it was indeed the Rubix cube he had found Rubix with. Was Rubix here?! Oh god he hoped not!! He slowly reached a hand out for the cube, but withdrew it when something dashed out of a large cracked hole in the glass.
This thing grabbed the Rubix cube and scurried up the wall. James screamed and fell against he floor, pushing himself up against the glass, trying to put as much distance from him and that thing. "W-who are you?!"
The creature made a small purr noise, and it slowly scurried it way down the wall, the sound of small claws tip tapping against the tiled floor made James more on edge. The creature stopped a few feet from him, sitting like a dog would.
"S-Stay back!!" The creature was unfazed and dropped the rubix cube,  pushing it to James with its hand. As it did this it replaced it gave into the small light of the flickering bulb. James sockets widened "....Rubix?"
The blue haired boy nodded, his smile stretched across his face. "W-What are you, doing here?" Rubix tilted his head, "Oh!! Right....can't talk can you?" Rubix nodded his head.
James stood up and brushed the dust off his clothes. "....Do you...live here?" Rubix picked up his cube and nodded, turning the sides of the small colour cube to try and solve the puzzle.
"But....what about your parents?" Rubix turned to him "Don't you have a mom and...and a dad?" Rubix cocked a brow. James blinked at him for a few moments "...you....don't know what a family is?" Rubix shook his head.
James was utterly shocked at his answer. Had he been living down here the whole time?! Why hadn't he tried to say anything?! James mentally slapped himself for not thinking of it sooner, he wore a strap jacket!!! How could he not think of this?!
"Well..would you like to come home with me?" He rubbed his neck nervously, his book held under his arm "In sure that Mrs. Cameron wouldn't mind If you did. So what do you say?"
Rubix didn't know what he was saying really, but he looked happy, so it must be good. He nodded eagerly and the two made their way out of the building.
