-Lance's POV-
I stared into the mirror, my icy blue eyes staring back at me. I flinched as my breath fogged up the glass, my pale lips curling into a ghost of a grin. "Boo." My reflection laughed, and blue exploded outwards, everything bleeding into a whirlwind of white.
I bolted upwards, chest heaving for air. I ran a hand through my hair, eyes wide. I shivered, fingers leaving faint blue marks on my skin. "Blue." I mumbled, sitting in silence. My racing pulse slowed to normal, and I dragged myself out bed, getting ready in the bathroom, gaze avoiding the mirror. I flinched when the doorknob was briefly coated in a faint layer of frost, and I quickly walked to the kitchen, grabbing a cup of warm water. I silently sat in a chair, hands wrapped around the steaming cup. My eyes trailed to the ceiling, and I let my thoughts wander.
"Lance?"
A voice rang out. I jumped, my head snapping around to see Shiro standing in the doorway. "Oh, hey Shiro." I smiled, turning my attention back to the cold cup of water that I held in my hands. Shiro frowned, walking up to me. "Are you okay?" I laughed, "Yeah." Shiro raised an eyebrow. "Are you sure? Why are you up at 3 in the morning?" I shot up from my chair, discarding the cup of water on the table. "It's 3 am?" My eyes were wide, "Why are you up?" Shiro shrugged, "Couldn't sleep." I nodded, sighing. "I know how that feels." I muttered, shivering as the deep bone-chilling cold rose through me. Shiro looked at me, a strange look on his face. "What?" I questioned, confused. "Nothing, I just never really took you as one to-" He stopped. "Have sleep elude me, stay up late because your brain won't stop moving a million miles a minute?" I sighed, "I may be Lance McClain," I gave him a tired smile,
"But I have secrets and problems like everyone else."
I pushed off from the table, ignoring the look of surprise that adorned Shiro's face. "Well, I'm off." I said, "But try counting the stars. It helps, sometimes." I said, passing Shiro. I made my way back to my room, closing the door and staring at the clock as time crept by ever so slowly.
_____________
-Lance's POV-"Paladins, report to the mission room stat!" Allura's voice rang through the air, startling me. I quickly rushed out the door, the ever present chill aching in my chest. I stumbled into the control room, smiling as I pulled my armor on. "Good morning!" I smiled as Hunk walked in, and he grinned back. "Hey." He laughed, the others filing in. "You're here kind of early," Pidge said, "How'd you sleep?" I smirked, "Oh, I slept like an Altean in a healing pod." I snickered, "I was out like a light." Pidge rolled her eyes, and Shiro looked at me. I turned to Allura. "So, Princess. What's the rush?" Allura huffed frustrated. "We have a mission," She began, "A neighboring planet has sent out a distress call. We shall go and check it out." I groaned. "All of us? Right now?" Allura nodded stiffly. "Let's go." I walked over to Blue, feeling our connection surge stronger. I clambered into the cockpit, shuddering as the cold surged over me. Blue grumbled, and I sighed.
"I'm okay girl."
I smiled. "Let's do our best, okay?" Blue purred in agreement. I piloted us out of the hangar, following the others through the wormhole and down onto a small green planet. "Um, guys?" I asked through the comms, "I don't mean to be stupid, but it doesn't look like anyone's here." I was met with static before Pidge's voice broke through. "He's right. Green's not picking up any foreign heat signatures, which means-" She was cut off as lasers flew towards us, and I yelped, slamming on the controls to avoid the deadly bullets. "Okay then," I gasped, "No distress call, just Galra!" I flipped Blue over, firing at several ships behind me, sending them spiraling towards the ground. "Lance! We need you on the ground!" Shiro yelled over my helmet. I nodded and gently landed Blue on the ground. "Stay safe, girl." I whispered, grabbing my Bayard and running into a clearing, shooting down Galra after Galra. "Lance!" A voice yelped, and I whirled around, eyes widening as I saw the others cornered by an impossible amount of Galran soldiers. "Guys!" I yelled, running towards them. "HUNK!" Keith's panicked voice reached my ears, my eyes widened as I saw a soldier take aim, and in a split second, I knew.
No one would be able to stop him.
I took a deep breath and thrust my hand forward, eyes narrowing as ice coated the soldier in a thick sheet of frozen crystals. I twirled around and sliced my hand through the air, ice sprouting from the ground and wrapping itself around Galra after Galra. I held my palm out into the air and an ice spear fell into it. I closed my eyes briefly before opening them and charging at the Galra that surrounded my friends, weaving ice through the enemy ranks. I let ice explode from my body, and it spread across the battlefield, freezing any Galran soldier it came into contact with. My eyes glowed faintly, and I tore through the Galran ranks, ice shooting through the air. I shivered as the last of the Galra fell, and I held my hand out, ice swirling in the air. I shuddered as my breath froze before returning to normal. I dropped my bayard, stumbling backwards as my eyes grew wide.
I just lost control in front of my teammates.
I heard footsteps approaching, and I looked down, hair crackling softly as the tips of it became incased in ice. My hands shook slightly as they neared, and I squeezed my eyes shut.
"Lance?!"
Shiro's voice rang loud and clear. "Y-Yeah?" I asked, another wave of cold washing over me. "What just happened?" Pidge's shaking voice carried over the field. I slowly opened my eyes, flinching as the others stood frozen, staring at me. "Well," I sighed, "There's no getting out of this." I held my hand out, ice forming small spires in my palm.
"I can control ice."
I stated, the ice spires morphing into a small box. I stretched my hand out, a blade of ice forming in my hand. I exhaled, and the air dropped in temperature. "H-How?" Hunk's eyes were wide, his face pale. "I got hit with a bolt of electricity a while back when I was in Blue." I shifted uncomfortably, "And I was knocked out. When I woke up, I was surrounded by ice. I was so cold, and that's when I knew that Blue had accidentally given me some of her ice abilities." I looked up, smiling weakly. Keith stood locked in place, and Shiro didn't speak. I shivered as another surge of deep chills escaped my body, the grass around me turning frozen and stiff with frost. I wrapped my arms around myself and fell to my knees as the cold fully submerged me, drowning me. I began to shake, the only thing I could feel was the cold,
The freezing cold.
