Tyler and Josh sat together on the roof of the vessel, neither boy speaking. Tyler wasn't entirely sure what to say, and it seemed as if Josh felt the same. The atmosphere had changed from soft affection to an awkward silence.
Josh had eaten his sandwich and drank his water. If things were normal, both of them would be talking together now, but things were not normal.
"I'm sorry," Josh said finally.
Tyler lifted his head. "For what?"
"I don't know." Josh didn't meet Tyler's eyes. "For kissing you, I guess."
"Don't be sorry, I liked it." A faint blush dusted Tyler's cheeks.
Josh smiled at the sight. "So did I." Then his smile faded. "But I gave you all those bruises..."
Tyler lowered his head again. "I don't mind..."
Josh reached out, almost grasping Tyler's hands in his own, but he stopped himself. "I mind, okay? I don't want to hurt you."
"It's not a big deal--"
"It is! It is a big deal, Tyler. I want you to be safe, and you can't be if I'm giving you bruises all the time. I don't want you to be in pain, and besides, what if somebody saw them?" Josh sighed, very quietly. "We shouldn't...we shouldn't kiss each other anymore."
Tyler's voice grew softer, so quiet that Josh could barely hear it. "But I want to kiss you."
"I know," Josh said quietly. "I want to kiss you too, but I want you to be safe, too."
"I'd rather hurt and be able to kiss you than be safe without you." Tyler lifted his eyes to Josh's almost daring him to speak.
Josh didn't say anything.
Neither did Tyler.
Because despite what Josh had said, they were kissing again.
