Tyler and Josh took the supplies Tyler had brought and went up onto the roof of the vessel. It was like their own little fort, almost.

"I brought these for you," Tyler said, holding out the three granola bars for Josh. The alien boy took them gratefully, then frowned at seeing that they were wrapped.

"I'll show you how to unwrap them," Tyler added with a smile. He took one and unwrapped it slowly, so Josh could learn how. He handed it to Josh, and the boy took it, taking a bite.

"I don't know if you need water..." Tyler sheepishly held out the plastic bottle towards Josh, the lid already unscrewed.

Josh's eyes lit up. "I do, yeah." He took it and drank a few precious swallows. "Not as often as you probably do, but still."

"I, uh." Tyler fumbled with his words. He wasn't entirely sure how to say it. "I made a drawing of you."

Josh looked confused. "What's a drawing?"

Opening his notebook to the drawing he'd done, Tyler explained. "It's something you make. A representation of something, either from life or your mind, out on paper." Shyly, he held out the notebook to Josh.

The alien boy carefully took the notebook from Tyler and stared at the drawing. It was a perfect likeness of Josh, sitting on the metal roof of the vessel and looking up at the stars. "Wow, this is amazing!"

Tyler beamed, feeling proud. A rare emotion for him. "Thank you."

"Can I keep it?"

Tyler had never torn anything out of his black notebooks before, not even mistakes. But for Josh,  he was willing to make an exception. "Sure." Carefully, he tore the picture out of the notebook a long the perforated line, and handed it to Josh.

Their hands brushed, just slightly, and Tyler saw faint white stars at the edge of his vision. That was definitely going to leave a bruise.

"Thank you," Josh said with a broad grin. "I'll keep it forever."
