I was on my third date with Zac. He insisted we go on a hike and and take pictures. I hadn't been looking my best since I left Matt; my hair looked stringy and dirty, my eyes were sunken in, and I was paler than usual. Regardless, I agreed to let Zac take pictures of me. He drove us to a trail in a part of town I'd never been to before. Matthew had never enjoyed the outdoors much, and it had been ages since I went hiking. As the sun began to set, Zac positioned me for a picture. He showed it to me and I smiled. He really was a talented photographer, and I looked almost happy in the picture, as happy as could be expected. I posted it on my Instagram with the caption "it's super fun forgetting all about you🌙💞"

As we walked towards the end of the trail towards Zac's car, my phone rang. It was Matthew. I hadn't heard from him since my birthday, and I felt an odd feeling in my stomach as I pressed decline. "Who's Matt?" Zac asked. "A friend, it can wait." I put my phone on do not disturb and grabbed Zac's hand, admiring the landscape around us.

It was a quarter to nine when Zac dropped me off at my hotel. I kissed him and headed inside, ready to put on my pajamas and watch TV. I had been taking baby steps into leaving the hotel and hanging out with people, and the several hours I spent with Zac had exhausted me both mentally and physically. I took my phone off do not disturb and changed into my yellow gnash hoodie and sweatpants, replacing my contacts with glasses and pulling my hair up away from my face. I had only been laying in bed for ten minutes when the phone rang. I picked it up to see it was TJ, Matt's little brother. Him and I hadn't talked since the breakup, and I had no idea what he could want, so I didn't answer. Less than a minute later, he called again. I answered and put him on speaker so I could check my notifications while we talked. I realized that while my phone was on do not disturb, I got a text from Matt. He said "I know you're mad at me but this is important. I need you to call me back." I felt my face get hot as I said hello to TJ.

"Hey Ashton, are you busy?" I muted the TV and cleared my throat. "No not really, is everything okay?" "Look we're not sure what's wrong yet but Matt woke up this morning with a pain in his stomach and it hasn't gotten any better. We're at the hospital now and they're saying something about his pancreas and surgery and I don't know what's going on but I think you should come." His speaking was rushed and he sounded panicked. "TJ I'm not sure he'll want me there." "No he will, please come." I sighed and stood up from the bed, putting on my tennis shoes. "I'll be there in twenty minutes." "Thank you." I hung up the phone and walked out to my car.  The endless possibilities of what could be wrong with Matthew ran through my head. I found myself overwhelmed with emotion, but I blinked away the tears  as I pulled onto the highway towards the only boy I had ever truly loved.
