Matthew and I arrived three minutes after our appointment. Usually, I would fuss at him, but I wanted us to go at least one full day without fighting, so I just walked into the dress shop. Dresses hung on hooks against each wall, and a large chandelier on the ceiling dimly lit the room. It was romantic and exciting, and I struggled to remember that I was not getting married.
The woman who helped us was only a few years older than me. She had long blonde hair and wore a nametag that read "Jen." She recognized Matthew and insisted on calling him blackbear, though he said that she could call him Mat. She was a bit chattier with Mat than I would have liked, and he was flirting back, touching her arm and laughing. I found myself jealous, even though I was well aware that Mat and I were not together and I had a boyfriend of my own. Jen walked to the back to get some dresses and Matthew and I sat on a large white couch, waiting for her.
My arms were crossed, and I was pouting slightly. "What's wrong Ash?" "Nothing." He knew me better than that. "She was just a fan, I was being friendly." "K." "Besides, why does it matter? You're with Zac." He was right, and I shouldn't be angry, but I was anyways. That feeling quickly subsided when Jen reentered the room, several dresses hung over her arms. "Okay I brought some dresses in a few different styles for you to try on so if you want to go back in that dressing room on your right, I'll wait here with Mat." "Actually, will you go get a few more lace dresses while I try these ones on?" "Sure." I didn't want her anywhere near Mat.
I tried on several dresses before trying on one I liked enough to go show Mat. It was a long sleeved dress with lace on the sleeves and a cut out in the back. I walked out nervously, my head hanging low to avoid my ex fiancé's glance. When he stayed silent, I looked up to find him smiling at me. "You're so beautiful." My heart skipped a beat, compliments were once so common, but I had not heard one from him in so long. "You don't have to act so surprised, you've known me for five years." "Take the compliment and go try on some other dresses." I smiled contently and turned around, walking back towards the dressing room.
It took a while, but I found a dress I liked even more than the first one I showed Mat. It had spaghetti straps and curved down at the chest. It was white and lace with designs in the fabric. I looked at myself in the mirror, imagining myself as a bride, before heading back out. "Oh my gosh." Mat whispered, his eyes beginning to water. "I'm sorry, I don't know why I'm crying. I'm not upset it's just..." A middle aged woman who worked there interrupted him, saying "It's very common for a man to cry when seeing the woman he loves in her wedding dress. It's a very special moment." Mat nodded in agreement. "I want you to marry me in that dress." My heart dropped to my stomach, the cruel reality of the situation I was in with Mat once again ruining a good day. "Matthew..." He took out a credit card and handed it to the woman. "We'll take it." "Wonderful, I'm so happy for you two."
She walked off with his card. "Mat we have no use for that dress." "I can't leave without it. It's made for your Ash; that's your dress." "Matthew you know we're not..." He held up a hand to cut me off. "Please don't ruin this for me." He kissed my cheek and followed behind the woman towards the cash register. Matthew and I were living in a fantasy where everything was okay between us, and I didn't know how to stop it. I didn't know if I wanted to stop it; I was afraid I may be falling in love with him all over again.
