I wiped my tears before entering the bedroom. Matthew was still sleeping, but I layed next to him, placing a kiss on his cheek to wake him up. He opened his eyes and smiled groggily. "Good morning baby." He reached for the pills and glass of water I had brought up earlier. "Good morning. How'd you sleep?" Mat wrapped his arms around me and I put my head on his chest, listening to the quiet rhythm of his heartbeat as he spoke. "Good, you're in a good mood today." I felt bad, knowing that I always switched up on him so quickly and that he never knew whether or not I'd be happy. "I know, how are you feeling today? Do you want to go to the movies or something? Or we could stay here." I kissed him, moving my hands up to his short hair when my phone rang. "Mat will you check who's calling?" He moved away from me to look at my phone, sitting on the bedside table. "It's your mom." "I should probably get this, I'm sorry." I picked up the phone and propped myself up against the throw pillows on the bed.
"Hey mom what's up?" "Oh hi dear, how have you been?" My mother and I weren't particularly close, and a phone conversation between us was rare. Everything she knew about my life came from things my siblings had told her. "I'm good, how's everything at home?" "We're all doing good here, Roy and I were just wondering if you're still planning on coming to Arkansas for Christmas. If so, is Mat coming? Andrea was saying she thought you two may be getting back together." Roy was my stepdad, and in years past, Matthew and I had gone to Arkansas to spend the holidays with my family. However, as the season approached, I had put no thought into what we would do this year. So much had changed since this time last year and Christmas plans were the least of my worries.
"Mat's health has been getting better so I should be able to come home for Christmas. I'm not sure whether Mat will come with me. I'll talk to him and let you know." I responded, completely avoiding the topic of whether or not Mat and I were back together. "Okay sweetie just let me know. "Okay, bye mom."
I hung up the phone before she had time to attempt to continue the conversation. I looked over at Matthew, who was now on his phone. "Hey, are you going to Arkansas with me for Christmas this year?" He didn't even look up as he shrugged. "I don't know, am I invited?" In an attempt to get his attention, I moved back to his side of the bed. "Of course." "It might be weird, I'll just stay here for the holidays." I grabbed his phone from him and turned it off. "All alone? Absolutely not. Please come, it's a tradition." "No Ashton, it's a family thing. I'm not family anymore." I held his hands and tried to make eye contact with him, though he avoided my glance. "Matthew, you'll always be my family. Come to Arkansas with me." He let go of my hands and crossed his arms. "Why? So I can hear you tell your family about your new boyfriend? I don't think so Ash." "I don't plan on telling them about Zac." "It just won't be the same as it used to be. I'm not your fiancé anymore, meaning I don't have to suffer through your family functions. Mac and I will spend Christmas here." "Whatever. I tried to be nice, but if you want to stay in LA alone and be miserable, that's fine by me."
I exited the bedroom, slamming the door behind me. While scrolling through my social media, I got a text from Zac. "Hey Ash, I've been missing you and was wondering if you wanted to go Christmas shopping at the mall today." Irritated with Mat and still in need of many presents, I responded "Sure, pick me up in 15 minutes :)" I was angry and annoyed and I wanted to spend a good day with Zac to distract myself from the fact that I might never be truly happy with Matthew again.
