the cake

I woke up the next morning at a quarter to eleven to a text from Taylor. "remember your appointment at the cake place is at noon. try to be optimistic and have fun. call me tonight and we can discuss how it went :)💞" I responded with "of course I'll call you, thanks for doing this" and got up from the recliner I was sleeping in to begin getting ready. It was cold as we neared December, and I decided to dress for comfort instead of looking cute. Besides, I would be changing into dresses soon anyways. I dug through the small duffel bag of things I had brought to the hospital, and put on black jeans with a yellow Nike sweatshirt and my checkered Vans. I left my hair down and put on minimal makeup before waking Mat.

It took him a minute to get up, and he had a nervous energy that made me uncomfortable. He didn't seem angry, but we didn't talk as he changed clothes and went to the bathroom to brush his teeth. We checked him out of the hospital at 11:30, and as Matthew walked in front of me towards the entrance, the nurse who had talked to me the day prior grabbed my arm. "Good luck sweetie, try not to give up on him. I hope he stays healthy and you two can work things out." I smiled. "Thank you."

Mat and I walked out to his Range Rover, which was parked in the hospital parking lot. We both got in and he started the car, but instead of backing out, he removed the chain with my ring on it from his neck, unhooking the clasp and taking the ring off of it. "Do you want to wear this, at least for today? I mean we're doing wedding stuff." This offer was so awkward and I wasn't sure whether I should accept it, but remembering Taylor's text, I nodded. "Of course." He placed the ring on my finger, the first time I had had it on since October. "C'mon, let's go pick out a wedding cake."

The directions Taylor gave me led us to a small bakery in a rich part of town. You could smell the sugary baked goods from outside, and I looked at my ex fiancé, trying to read his expression. For the first time in a long time, Matthew smiled. Not a half smile or a fake one, but a real, genuine smile where I could see his teeth. He reached out for my hand, and I allowed him to hold it as we walked inside, taking a seat.

An older Italian man greeted us and began to bring out slices of cake. The first was red velvet, one of Mat's favorites flavors, though I always thought cream cheese icing was gross. Next was a lemon cake, which was very good but we both agreed was too tart and wouldn't be too popular among our wedding guests. I wasn't sure why we were really discussing this; there wasn't going to be a wedding. However, we continued like this for the next hour, debating our favorite cakes and how we would decorate each one. In the end, we decided our favorite was a vanilla cake with lemon icing. The owner of the baker asked us when we needed the cake by, to which Mat responded that we didn't have a date set yet for the wedding and that we'd be in touch. It made me sad, knowing we would never go through with getting that wedding cake, but I left Mat and that was a decision I had to live with. We got back in the car on our way to a destination that I knew would make me even more emotional; the wedding dress shop.

I looked at the comment for a second, debating whether or not to delete it. Eventually, I decided not to, and blocked Zac from seeing my profile, hoping he wouldn't notice. Still unaware of how I felt but wanting to enjoy my day, I held Mat's hand as we drove towards the dress shop.
