Christmas vacation this year was to an unfamiliar destination, chosen randomly, but that sounded interesting. It's always nice to escape and experience the unexpected...

Christmas Dinner

Forgot about making
Christmas dinner reservation.
Concierge finds a cancellation
for late evening.
Say YES without hesitation.

Took Uber to church,
now a converted dinner place.
Hostess can't find reservation
in their system.
Wait in cramped space.

Overheat in winter garments
bodies begin to bead.
Eventually guided to our seats
and handed buffet menu.
The staff appeared harried.

Waitress apologizes
explains they are short staffed.
We decide to leave
for an exciting adventure.
We must have been quite daft.

Walk passed restaurants all closed
for the Christmas holiday.
Experience a new sensation;
panic, we'll be left hungry.
Temper begins to fray.

Miles and calories burned
as did my blistered feet.
A snaking line of patrons
wait for Lebanese cuisine.
Visions of baklava treat.

Finally we are seated
with food a distant dream.
We immediately order
hot cups of fresh mint tea.
Chamomile aroma from the steam.

Waiter apologizes
explains gunpowder green is gone.
Takes it away and brings matcha
an unpleasantly bitter brew;
I think of my morning Ceylon.

Request sugar to sweeten
what pours from our tea pot.
Fresh mint has now disappeared
as we all laugh together.
Expectations completely shot.
