A few months into the school year and Wendy has only gotten a couple of interactions with Mark and Jackson. Ranging from saying hi to asking for worksheets. On the bright side, they learned her name. However, Wendy was still not sure who she liked more.
Fortunately for Wendy, she was able to spend time with Mark by assisting him after class with organizing worksheets since Jackson was absent. Mr. Shin left the class for the lunch break, like everyone else had, except Wendy. She had her slow packing skills to thank.
Looking over to her left, she saw Mark struggling to sort out the humongous piles of paper. So she offered to help and Mark gladly accepted. He pulled out a comfy chair for her while he sat in a regular one and pushed the seat once Wendy sat. He explained what they had to do: staple five worksheets together and separate them for the other periods. Wendy nodded and Mark thanked her with a bright smile.
He watched her delicate hands stack the packets and couldn't help but to be mesmerized by her beauty. Seeing her up close was totally different from seeing her in the front row and he liked what he saw. His staring fest ended when Wendy's stomach growled. Her face immediately flushed and he chuckled.
"Do you want some rice cakes?"
"Yes, please. Thank you." Her eyes flickered to the floor, face still red. Mark couldn't hide his smile.
"You're so cute." Her gaze from the floor met Mark's eyes with surprise.
He opened his container filled with rice cakes and handed Wendy chopsticks. She held them and picked up the rice cake gently to place into her mouth. She chewed slowly, indulging the taste.
Mark wondered how she makes everything look enjoyable. If only he could spend more time with her. Probably unlikely since she views him only as a TA.
Jackson bursted into the room, breathing heavily. Wendy stared at the sudden yet heavenly sight. Mark saw her eyes light up and sighed, deducing how Wendy likes Jackson, his best friend.
"Mark, I'm sorry for being late. Do you need some help?"
"I've got it covered. Wendy's helping me."
Jackson looked at Wendy and smirked.
"Hey."
"Hello!"
His eyes switched to Mark. "Do you mind if I steal Wendy away from you to grab the cleaning supplies?"
"Not at all," Mark answered nonchalantly even though he felt dejected.
"Are you sure? I can still help you with the packets," Wendy said, worriedly.
"It's fine. Thanks for your help."
"Alright. Follow me, Wendy."
Wendy walked behind Jackson but looked back at Mark who gave a faint smile. As much as she liked Jackson, she didn't want to leave Mark. In fact, she liked how kind Mark was; he made her feel warm.
Those thoughts stayed in her mind as they walked to the janitor's closet to retrieve the wipes for cleaning desks and tables. She wasn't focused on where she was leaning and bumped into the wall, making the broom almost fall on her. Jackson caught the broom before it could hit her head. Wendy was unfazed.
"Are you okay?"
"Huh? Oh, yeah. Thanks." She laughed awkwardly.
"Really? What are you thinking about?" He observed her pondering face.
"I'm just slightly confused is all. It'll be solved."
"Good. We can go back to the classroom now."
They walked back to the classroom and saw Mark still stapling the papers. Wendy placed the cleaning supplies on the desk and started cleaning, but was distracted by those recurring thoughts and Mark. She stopped cleaning and left Jackson to assist Mark again.
She didn't feel the need to ask him if he wanted help; she just stapled. Mark looked at her, confused.
"Why aren't you helping Jackson?"
"Because I'd rather help you."
"How come?"
"I like spending time with you."
"So do I."
"Cool."
"Don't you have a crush on Jackson?"
Wendy's eyes widened.
"How did you know?"
"I can tell by the way you look at him. It's the same look I give you."
Mark didn't realize he admitted the last part.
Stunned, Wendy just kept her mouth open.
Then she sputtered a quick message.
"Actually, I had a crush on him. Ever since the beginning of the year, I laid my eyes on both of you because I couldn't choose. After helping you with the papers today, I discovered how much I liked doing a simple task. It was because of you. I didn't enjoy walking with Jackson as much I thought I would've. Especially because you were the only thing on my mind. Therefore, I like --"
Before Wendy could finish, Mark crashed his lips onto hers while capturing her face. She wrapped her arms around his waist. He hoisted her onto the table and they switched their hands' positions. When they released, their foreheads touched, both of them smiling against their lips.
"I've always wanted to do that. I liked you on the first day of school. Immediately when I saw you, I smiled because I thought you were cute. You still are, by the way." He finished that off with a wink.
Sadly, Jackson had witnessed this while his feelings for Wendy were present. But since Mark looked happy, Jackson accepted it.
