Epilogue; Taking Mark's advice, Wendy was able to regain her interest in learning. She broke her second place curse and tied with Mark. But for some reason, being tied for first place was more satisfying than if she were to have beaten him, making him in second place.
Whatever the reason was, she was glad she didn't have to compete with him. There's nothing wrong with trying your hardest, but if it reaches to the point where you're unhappy, relax. Take a step back and take a deep breath—or even a break. Whatever you desire to do in your life, make sure it's for you, and only you. Otherwise, you'll only hurt yourself in the long run.
Along with taking Mark's advice, she started to spend some more time with him—as friends—and it didn't take long for her feelings for him to return. He holds a special place in her heart as the boy who noticed her maturity and brought her back.
Here's how her confession to him went:
As always, the real deal occurs when class is dismissed and everyone has walked out the door.
This time, it was Wendy who called Mark when he was walking forwards.
"Mark!"
He turned around.
"Hey, Wendy."
"Congratulations on being in first place!"
"You too."
"We're co-winners." She snickered.
Mark snickered back. A long pause followed.
"So, uh, thank you for being my friend."
"The pleasure is all mines. Trust me."
"Well, I want to be more than friends."
"You want to be best friends, then?"
"More than that."
"Best, best friends?"
"I want to be your girlfriend!"
Mark was questioning whether he heard that correctly. He took off his glasses and set them on the desk next to him. He then rubbed his eyes.
"Y-you want to be my girlfriend?"
"Yes!"
"Why? I'm just some nice nerd. Nice guys always finish last. Nerds finish last, too."
"Not in this story. Don't forget that I'm also a nerd."
"You're pretty, smart, kind, and simply incredible. Can't you see how you deserve someone better?"
She grabbed his glasses and placed them back onto his face. He pushed his glasses.
"You are phenomenal, Mark. Can't you see how attractive you are? Those other girls can see it as well."
"Those other girls aren't—"
She placed her lips onto his and they shared a soft, sweet kiss.
"I deserve you, and you deserve me. End of story."
He kissed her with more affection. They smiled as their lips touched.
From academic competitors, to lovers.
