Prologue; Wendy's POV
"Wendy," Sehun whispers into my ear. Sehun, my best friend, the one whom I love. Only, he doesn't know that. I have to do it silence because:
"Ask Irene if she has a boyfriend," he adds. A little part of my heart dies. Sehun has had a crush on her for quite some time, but he's too shy to pursue her, so he asks me to help. And of course I do, because I want him to be happy. If he's happy with Irene, then so be it.
I can see why he likes her, though. She's gorgeous, thin, and athletic; she's perfect. Totally Sehun's type.
Irene sits in front of me, and I tap her shoulder. She turns around, arching her eyebrow.
"Yes, Wendy?" she asks.
"My friend would like to know if you have a boyfriend."
She shakes her head. "No, I don't. Who's asking?"
"It's a secret." I place my finger on my lip and shush her quietly. She giggles and turns around. I look to my left at Sehun. This idiot is overfilled with joy. He must really like her to act like a little boy, which is adorable. If only he acted like this around me.
He leans in, and my cheeks warm up. What I wouldn't give just to have Sehun to always be this close to me. "Ask her what she thinks of me," he again whispers. I roll my eyes, but I listen to his request. Even if it hurts.
"Irene," I call.
She turns around, and says, "Hm?"
"What do you think of Sehun?" I point to him. This loser is trying his best to seem calm and collected. I know his heart is beating abnormally fast right now, his palms sweaty. He's probably a nervous wreck.
She takes a nice, long stare at him. "He's good-looking."
"And he is also the friend who was interested in your relationship status."
She smiles. "Really?" She looks at him again, tucking her hair behind her ear. Sehun grins the widest grin humanly possible. Unbelievable.
Irene turns to her desk and pulls out a piece of paper. She's writing quickly.
What is she writing?
She hands the neatly folded paper to me, and I give it to Sehun. Before he grasps the note, Irene mouths to him, "Call me." She even transformed her hand into a phone and placed it next to her ear. He opens the note (or whatever it is) and takes his phone out. He's punching in numbers.
Ah. The revelation finally hit me. He got Irene's digits, which means they are most definitely a couple.
Great.
They're texting all throughout class. The bell dismisses us and normally he waits for me so that he could walk me home, but today is the not the case. He scurries out of class, holding hands with Irene.
I hope I didn't lose my best friend.
As it turns out, I think I did. The following day is similar. Sehun is too busy flirting with Irene to care to talk to me. Every morning he would text me to wake up and meet me halfway before school starts. Today: no texts, no meetup, no Sehun.
I try not to pay attention to them, but with everyone shipping them, how could I not? I couldn't argue with how they do look great together, their personalities do click amazingly, and Sehun is so much happier with her.
I feel tears form, and I bite my lip. I'm not going to cry; I'm not going to make Sehun worry about me, even if he isn't paying attention to me.
The dismissal bell excuses us, and it is the same scenario all over again.
I hope tomorrow will change.
But to no avail. The following week is the same cycle: no texts, no meetup, no Sehun. I don't think he's deliberately ignoring me. I truly hope he isn't. He's just preoccupied with Irene, that's all.
The next day he comes to school angry.
What happened?
He looks for me, and grabs me by the shoulders. I am taken aback, but I grab him, too. He looks at me sternly. Sehun has never gazed into my eyes in this manner.
"I found out Irene has been cheating on me," he says gravely.
My eyes widen. "With whom?"
"Taehyung," he spits out with disgust.
I pull Sehun into my embrace. His exterior shows anger, but deep down, I know he's upset. I pat his back gently and smooth out his hair. He's like a baby I have to protect.
He pulls away. "Thank you, Wendy," he says as he ruffles my bangs.
"For what?"
"For being by my side."
My face falls.
I won't always be there, Sehun.
"Sehun, I have to go to Canada soon." My voice falters.
His eyebrows furrow. "Why? Why didn't you tell me sooner?"
I shrug and look at my shoes. "You were busy with Irene."
"That's not an excuse."
"You barely said a word to me while you were dating her."
"That's still not an excuse. You didn't say a word to me, either."
"I wanted to give you space."
Sighing, he looks off into the distance, and then back at me. "When are you moving?"
I shrug again; I'm not telling him I'm moving tomorrow.
"Soon." Is this considered a lie?
I'm sorry, Sehun. Goodbye. I need to move on.
