Jace
"I'm sorry sir, but this is where the line ends for you," A nurse says from behind my shoulder. "There's a waiting room to the left. You can stay as long as it takes." I walk into the waiting room and cry in a ball on the in the corner beside the vending machine. My innocent little red is dying? Why is this happening? Why her and not me? Red, please say you won't let go.
After several minutes, I pull myself together and go to the desk. "Can...can I please see Clarrisa Fray?" I ask the nurse.
"I'm sorry sir, but you're going to need permission from her guardian to see her, since she's a minor," the nurse explains.
I then realize no one knows about Red. Her mom! Shit! I need to call her mom! What do I say? What if she's mad at me and makes me leave? It... .it doesn't matter she has to know. I get my phone out and call Jocelyn.
"Jocelyn, it's Jace. Clarissa is at St. Francis Hospital. She's unconscious and the doctor hasn't told me anything yet. She passed out from blood loss. I...I...I didn't know. She....uh....she cut her arm with a blade. It...it's all my fault. I'm so sorry," I manage before I lose it. The tears come, my face is all puffy, and I can't breathe through my nose.
"I'm on my way!" Jocelyn exclaims. I go back to the vending machine and cry. Jocelyn arrives a few minutes later. "My baby, Clarissa Fray, where is my baby," Jocelyn shouts to the nurse at the desk. I walk out to the desk.
"Jocelyn, they wouldn't let me see her, until you gave them consent," I reply.
"She's in room 114 and she's still unconscious," the nurse informs us.
"Jace, you have permission to see Clarrisa any time," Jocelyn declares in front of the nurse. The nurse then nods, and we go to see Red. She's lying there peacefully. It looks like she's sleeping. Jocelyn rushes to her side, pulls up a chair, and takes her hand. We sit there in silence staring at a lifeless Red for hours, before Jocelyn has to got to work. With such short notice she couldn't call in and cancel her latest shift.
"Jace, I need you to promise me you won't leave her, until I get back," Jocelyn says.
"I promise not to leave Clarissa," I reply. She slowly walks out, and closes the door behind her. I knew I loved you then, but you'd never know.'Cause I played it cool when I was scared of letting go.
I take a seat next to Red and grab her hand. I sit there for a while, but I must doze off. I wake to someone whispering my name, "Jace, Jace is that you." I raise my head and realize I'm laying on her waist. Great job Jace! She's not even conscious and you still messed up! Ugh! Get off of her!
"I'm sorry Red, I didn't meant to fall asleep on you," I reply as I quickly get off.
"Jace, where are we?" Red asks confused. She looks so fragile and breakable! Why did this have to happen to my Red?
"We're at St. Francis Hospital," I explain. "I'm going to go get the doctor." I go and get the nurse and she pages the doctor. They come in and check her out. Her pulse and breathing is stable. They've given her some blood and she's doing better.
"We'll be back, but for now you can visit with your friend," the doctor says and they leave.
I look at Red and she asks, "What happened?"
"You....you cut your arm before Simon and I showed up because....of me...I would understand if you wanted me to leave. I will as soon as your mom gets back," I manage. "She had to go to work, but she'll be here as soon as she can."
"Jace, please don't leave me," Red cries. She doesn't hate me? Why doesn't she hate me?
"Why don't you hate me?" I ask.
"Jace, I believe you. I know you didn't cheat on me. Someone must've found out about your scars, and they're just trying to mess with us," Red explains.
"But...you...almost died because of me. I hate me for doing that to you," I explain. I hate myself!
"Jace, I...I could hear you, when I was passed out. It was fuzzy, almost like I was underwater, but I could hear you. I heard most of it. You...you called 911, you helped me, and you were sobbing. It went black for a while and then I'd come back. I know and I'm so sorry I didn't trust you," Red quietly replies.
I get up and walk towards Red. She nods her head, so I lay next to her, and I hold her close to me. "Shhh," I soothe. "It's okay. You certainly have nothing to apologize for." We just lay there in peaceful quietness. Red taps my shoulder, and I look at her.
"Jace, I don't want to break up with you," Red whispers in my ear.
"I..I don't want to break up with you either," I reply. She snuggles closer to me, and we fall asleep.
