Jace

Red gets in my car only after I promise to be quieter. In the back seat I have a little picnic packed. I had to make a deal with my math period teacher to store the basket in her fridge all day, so I would be able to take Red straight to the picnic spot. I was more than willing to give Mrs. Pinol money, but she had a different idea. After school tomorrow, I have to go in and clean her whiteboards by hand. Something about it being time consuming and she has things to do. Anyways, I have some sandwiches, some bottles of juice, baby wipes, silverware, and a few dessert items in a little basket. Oh and of course a blanket. I actually looked up what to bring on a picnic. I start driving. So, there's this beautiful park with lots of trails and nature. In particular, there is this one bush of flowers I want to sit by as we eat. I've traced the route many times and even ran it twice, just to make sure I could find it.

"Jace, where are we going?" Red asks.

"It's a surprise Red," I reply.

"Jace, you know I don't like surprises," Red comments.

"Well, I have high expectations that you'll love this one," I smile. Eventually, she lets it go and puts on some music. We arrive at the destination.

Red looks around and a smiles engulfs her face. "Jace, it's beautiful," Red whispers. Phew! I didn't mess up.

"I'm glad you like it," I manage. We get out of the car. I grab Red's hand.

"Where are we going?" Red asks but she can't stop from laughing. Her laugh warms me. I love knowing I can make her happy.

"Red, you know it's a surprise," I begin. "I cannot tell."

"There's nothing I can do to get you to tell me?" Red whines. Stop right now Jace! Stop! You too Jace Jr! Pull it together!

I clean my throat, "Unfortunately, there is nothing you can do to get me to tell you," I reply. We keep walking for a while. We walk into the cove thing. I carefully guide her through the hidden path. Then I see it! The special bush!

"Oh, Jace it's beautiful," Red whispers

"Oh, Jace it's beautiful," Red whispers. There's a little cove type thing. It makes the area around the bush secluded. No one can see into the area, unless they walk through the only entrance. However, the entrance is hard to spot. It's a nice quiet place to have a picnic.

"I'm glad you like it," I reply. "I...I was a little nervous you wouldn't like it."

"Jace, I love it. It's perfect," Red confesses. We sit down on the blanket.

"I'm not entirely sure what one brings on a picnic," I admit. "I looked up what to bring, so I hope it's okay. I brought some food, silverware, bottled juice, and baby wipes."

I look into Red's eyes nervously. "That sounds lovely Jace," Red assures me. I sigh. We lay the food.

Time for small talk, I guess. "So, how have you been?" I ask. Really Jace! Ugh! You're such an idiot! Come on! Pull it together!

"Jace, we've been side by side since the.....Kaelie incident. You know how I've been," Red explains. "What's gotten into you?"

"I....I'm just nervous. I planned everything, but I forgot to....figure out what to say. I'm completely winging it and apparently I'm not doing very well," I confess. Think! What could you talk about?

"Jace, you're doing well. It's okay," Red assures me.

I grab her and pull us from sitting to laying on the blanket. "Well, now let's not talk. Remember earlier, I promised to make it up to you later," I remind Red.

Suddently, Red slaps my arm. "Jace, we're in public. There will be no 'making it up to me' here," Red explains.

"You want to go to my house. My parents are out of town. Alec is at Mangus' house. Izzy is probably at Simon's. We could do whatever you'd like, so I 'make it up to you.' What do you say?" I ask.

Red bits her lip. That's not helping Jr! Ugh! Stop! Think of grandma! Think of grandma! I close my eyes tight after turning away from Red. "Jace, are you okay?" Red asks concerned. "You look like you're in pain."

You have no idea! "No," I manage. "I'm fine." We pack up the picnic and I go to get into the drivers seat.

"Jace, let me drive please," Red asks.

"Red, I promise I'm okay," I try.

"Jace Herondale, I'm not taking no for an answer! Something's wrong with you and if you don't want to tell me, I'll just figure it out myself," Red argues. I concede and hand her the keys. Red smiles at her victory.

Red pulls into my driveway. We make our way to my room. Silently, we lay side by side on my bed. "Jace, please tell me what's wrong," Red pleas.

"Nothing, I'm just tired. Maybe we can....pick this up tomorrow," I lie. After my speech about not pressuring her. When I said she should feel comfortable and natural, when we're being intimate. I can't let her see how worked up I am. I don't want her to feel bad.

"Jace, please don't push me away. I thought we were past this. I know it'll be hard for both of us, but please," Red reasons.

"I'm fine Red," I reply. "Let's just go to sleep."

"Jace, please," Red begins. "D...did I do something wrong? Suddently you don't want to 'make it up to me.' Please just tell me." Maybe I should just tell her? She's getting worked up about this. But....what if she feels pressured? I'd rather her be mad at me than at herself.
