Song of the Chapter: Head to the Ground, Neck Deep

*trigger warning for chapter*

Eva joined FOB on stage again that night, giving another speech similar to the last, smiling, laughing, not regretting being alive and in this family even the slightest that day. Everything felt in control and nearly perfect. Panic!'s set went without a hitch, she watched twenty one pilots from a hidden place backstage where she could marvel in peace, and when she waited to join Patrick, she just danced and sang along. Things felt good, safe.

Brendon pulled the happy-go-lucky girl to the side in the beginning of the show and asked her if she wanted to do a solo song as part of the bands' encores. Normally, she'd never do it, but tonight felt different. "Of course," Eva replied, smiling widely and brightly. "Glad to hear it kid" Brendon grinned, pulling her into a hug before continuing with "Any song ideas?" Eva pondered this for a minute or two. It was a lot of pressure to pick song people would like to hear acoustically, but also pick a song that means something to the person singing. "Head to the Ground, Neck Deep." The choice made Brendon smirk a bit before shrugging it off and chuckling.

Eva knew that Theo watched any video he could find of every single performance, and this song was going to be a letter to him. The last notes from Patrick's piano rang out and suddenly every performer backstage ran out, Eva included with an acoustic in hand. Brendon approached the microphone.

"Tonight, as part of the encore, my daughter Eva is going to sing a song by herself." The crowd's roar grew exponentially as she walked up to the mic. She ran a hand halfheartedly through the mess of ocean on her head before speaking and tuning her guitar at the same time. "So, this song may not be well known among all of you, but this song is something very special for someone who is very special to me. I started dating a dorky, music-loving nerd like me the day before tour, which is kind of stupid on my part, but anyway." Everyone on stage chuckled at that before Eva laughed herself and continued. "The first day we met, he wore a Neck Deep shirt. The day he helped me through a panic attack the first time, we talked about Neck Deep. And, tonight, this is my new way of telling him how important he is to me. Theo, thank you. This is 'Head to the Ground.'" A few cheers sprouted after her speech, but mainly it was semi-confused faces. Some were 'aww'ing at her sentiment, band members included. Eva shrugged the reaction off and started playing.

"Run for your train or you might miss it

But I know I'd miss you more
So here's this song that I've been listening to
It reminds me of you

And I hope I don't drag you down
'Cause I'm starting to feel alright thanks to you
And I hope this can all work out
'Cause I feel like myself when I'm running my head to the ground

When's the next time that I can see you?
Got so much time on my hands but it's slipping through my fingers
How the fuck did I even meet you?
I can only hope that it's fate and this all fell into place

And I hope I don't drag you down
'Cause I'm starting to feel alright thanks to you
And I hope this can all work out
'Cause I feel like myself when I'm running my head to the ground

Can't control myself
I do this every time
It's such a fatal flaw of mine
Such a fatal flaw

But I hope that you feel the same
And I hope we can both adjust to the pace of this
Maybe we'll be okay
Maybe you'll stop me from digging my own fucking grave

And I hope I don't drag you down
'Cause I'm starting to feel alright thanks to you
And I hope this can all work out
'Cause I feel like myself when I'm running my head to the ground."
