Prologue

❝I remember the first time I saw him. It was a cloudy afternoon, and with the temperatures going down every day, everybody was sure that we were going to get the first snow of the year. I went outside because I wanted to be the first to feel the snow on my cheeks, and to be the first in the town to see the year's first snowfall with my own eyes.

I sat by my front-porch for exactly twenty-three minutes. And why do I say exactly twenty-three minutes? Because it was after twenty-one minutes that the boy disrupted my thoughts by running down the streets and disappearing into the woods. It was by twenty-two minutes I checked my clock to see that it was 3.42PM, and it was by twenty-three minutes that I ran after him.❞
