"The issue on the table: France is at the verge of war with England. And do we provide aid and our troops to our French allies or do we stay out of it? Remember, my decision on this matter is not subject to congressional approval. The only person you have to convince is me. Secretary Jefferson, you have the floor, sir." Father pointed to Jefferson.
"When we were at death's door, when we were needy. We made a promise, we signed a treaty. We needed money and guns and half a chance. Who provided those funds?" Jefferson started.
"France." Madison answered.
"In return, they didn't ask for land. Only a promise that we'd lend a hand. And stand with them if they ever fought against oppressors. And revolution is messy but now is time to stand. Stand with our brothers as they fight against tyranny. I know that Alexander Hamilton is here and he would rather not have this debate. I'll remind you that he is not Secretary of State. He knows nothing of loyalty. Smells like new money, dresses like fake royalty. Desperate to rise above his station
Everything he does betrays the ideals of our nation," Jefferson stated, "Hey, and if ya don't know, now ya know, Mr. President." It seems like every cabinet meeting, Jefferson is bashing Alexander instead of actually talking about the problem.
"Yo! Let's talk about the problem! Not criticize other people! It won't help you fix the problem!" I yelled out.
"That's true!" Alexander defended me.
"Thank you, Secretary Jefferson and Y/n. Secretary Hamilton, your response."
I saw Alexander take in a deep breath and he yelled, "You must be out of your Goddamn mind if you think the President is gonna bring the nation to the brink of meddling in the middle of a military mess. A game of chess, where France is Queen and Kingless. We signed a treaty with a King whose head is now in a basket. Would you like to take it out and ask it? 'Should we honor our treaty, King Louis' head?' 'Uh... do whatever you want, I'm super dead.'" He responded.
"Enough! Enough, Hamilton's right." Father admitted.
"Mr. President—" Jefferson started.
"We're too fragile to start another fight." Father explained.
"But sir, do we not fight for freedom?" Jefferson asked.
"Sure, when the French figure out who's gonna lead 'em." Father answered.
"The people are leading." Jefferson tried to reason.
"The people are rioting, there's a difference. Frankly, it's a little disquieting you would let your ideals blind you to reality, Hamilton." Father argued.
"Sir." Alexander responded.
"Draft a statement of neutrality," Father demanded, "This meeting is over." I started to cry without knowing.
"Mama? Are you okay?" Philip asked.
"Oh," I noticed I had tears, "I'm fine, darling."
Alexander's POV:
"Did you forget Lafayette?" Thomas asked me. I felt something drop inside.
"What?" I questioned.
"Have you an ounce of regret? You accumulate debt, you accumulate power yet in their hour of need, you forget." Thomas stated.
"Lafayette's a smart man, he'll be fine and before he was your friend, he was mine and
Y/n's . If we try to fight in every revolution in the world, we never stop. Where do we draw the line?" I argued.
"So quick-witted." Jefferson pointed out.
"Alas, I admit it." I commented.
"I bet you were quite a lawyer." Jefferson complimented.
"My defendants got acquitted."
"Yeah. Well, someone oughta remind you."
"What?"
"You're nothing without Washington behind you."
"Hamilton!" Washington called behind me.
"Daddy's calling!" Jefferson taunted.
Y/n's POV:
I wondered what Thomas and Alexander were talking about. I wanted to go talk to them but I didn't want to leave the kids unattended.
"Angelica, Philip, please stay here. I'm gonna go talk to your father and grandfather. I'll be right back." I left them as they stayed. They brought some stuff like books. Yes, I taught them both to read because any good mother would.
"Washington!" Jefferson yelled out.
"You're lucky I still respond to that." I commented.
"Hey, do you have any plans this summer?" He asked.
"I was thinking about going to see my parents in Virginia."
"Well, I was thinking of you coming to visit me in Monticello, there's lots of land for the children to run around." Jefferson explained.
"I'll think about it." I answered.
I left and went to talk to my father and Alexander.
"Oh, hi Y/n." Father greeted.
"So, this summer, can we go visit you?" I asked.
"Yes. How long will you be staying?" He responded.
"Maybe the whole summer." I decided.
"Ok, I'll tell Martha when I get home." He answered.
"Alexander, are you coming?" I asked.
"I can't." He commented.
"Please?" I begged.
"Alexander, you should take a break. That's an order from your commander." Father demanded.
"Please? It's not healthy to be inside all day." I argued.
"..." Alexander didn't answer for a while, "I'll think about it.(she'll think about it. Any 21 Chump Street fans?) But that doesn't guarantee that I'll come."
"Knowing that you'll consider to saying yes and that would be enough." I kissed his cheek. I was so happy, even though he might say no(to this?). I mean how could he say no to me?
