"Alexander, come downstairs, right now." I yelled. He was stuck in his office, on one of the most important days. His own son's birthday.
"I can't." He yelled back.
I ran upstairs, "I'm only telling you this one last time. Come. Eat." I demanded.
"I can't. I have Jefferson taunting me in the office, and everyone is breathing down my neck and expecting great things from me." He explained. I walked over to where he was sitting.
"Why can't you take a break? John Adams spends the summer with his family." I mentioned.
"That's because John Adams doesn't have a real job." Alexander fired back.
I sat on his lap and kissed him on the lips. I then grabbed his paper that he was writing on and ran downstairs.
"Hey! Come back with my paper!" He ran after me. I laughed and hid the paper behind my back.
"Alexander your son is nine today. He has something he'd like to say. He's been practicing all day. Philip take it away." I informed him. Alexander looked at Philip. He looked very impatient like he had something better to do. Philip looked nervous, holding his paper and reading it.
"My name is Philip. I am a poet. I wrote this poem just to show it. And I just turned nine. You can write rhymes, but you can't write mine." Philip read with confidence.
"What?" Alexander looked surprised.
"I practice piano and French with my mother."
"Uh-huh." Alexander stated.
"I have a little sister, but I want a little brother." Philip continued.
Alexander chuckled, "okay." and he grabbed onto my waist. I felt my face heat up.
I made sure the paper was hidden from Alexander. I hid it on the bookshelf and I know he didn't notice.
"My daddy's trying to start America's first bank. Un deux trios quarté cinq!" Philip finished.
"Bravo." Alexander cheered.
"Take a break!" I put my head on his shoulder.
"Hey, our kid is pretty great!" Alexander complimented.
"Run away with us for the summer. Let's go to Virginia!" I suggested.
"Y/n, I've got so much on my plate." He answered.
"We can all go stay with my parents. There's a lake I know." I begged, while I looked up to his face.
"I know, you've told me before."
"In a nearby park." I finished, trying to kiss him.
"I'd love to go."
"We can get away when the night gets dark." I was inches away.
"I will try my best to get away." He started to walk back to his office. I was heartbroken that I never got a kiss from him. I sat down on the couch staring at completely nothing. "Oh, Y/n, where did you put my paper? I'd like it back please, darling."
"On the bookshelf. Middle shelf, between the yellow book and the green book." I informed him. He walked towards the bookshelf to find his paper and took it out between the books.
"Thank you, darling." He smiled as he ran up the stairs. Philip sat next to me.
"Mommy, are you okay?" Philip asked.
"Yes, I'm fine." I wrapped my arm around him. "Happy Birthday, Philip." I smiled. Kissing his head. Angelica came running to the couch. "What do you want for your birthday?" I asked him.
"Um, to go to school!" He answered enthusiastically.
"Okay!" I laughed.
"Mommy! Wasn't Philip's poem amazing?" She grinned. "Can you teach me to write like that?"
"Of course! But first let's have dinner." I answered. I was truly happy to see that Angelica was interested in learning and education.
"Will Daddy be joining us?" Philip asked with hope in his eyes.
"He can't." I stroked Philip's curls.
"What about when we go see grandma and grandpa?" Angelica questioned.
"He's thinking about it." I sighed.
"But we leave in a week." Philip pointed out.
"I know. It's just that Daddy's busy with work and sometimes men have to work. But, he's doing it all for us, because he loves us very much." I smiled.

One week later.
"Kids! Time to leave soon!" I picked up a suitcase of clothes.
"Is Daddy coming?" Angelica asked.
"I'll ask." I went upstairs. "So, is Mr. Hamilton coming with his wife and kids to Virginia?" I walked towards him and gave him a kiss on his cheek. He rubbed his eyes.
"I don't think so, madam." He stood up and wrapped his arms around my waist. "Looks like Mr. Hamilton will stay behind. But, if I truly finish this, maybe his wife will get a surprise." He kissed my cheek as I giggle.
"Oh, what surprise?" I questioned.
"It's not a surprise if I tell you, darling." He commented. "I have to get back to work, but I see you by the end of summer, is it?"
"Yes, end of summer. Don't work too hard and don't forget to eat or sleep. And always remember, taking a break is fine. If you ever change your mind, you're welcomed to come later." I advised.
"Yes darling. Now, say hi to Martha for me." He went back to work.
"Bye! I love you, Alexander." I beamed.
"I love you too." He responded. It's been a while since he told me that. I walked back downstairs.
"Sorry, but Daddy isn't coming." I informed the kids.
"Aww." They sighed in unison.
"It's okay. We'll see him soon." I told them. We got into the carriage and went towards Virginia. I feel asleep the whole ride, when I felt someone shake me. I thought that's probably Dad. Then I realized I was married.
"Wake up, Mommy! We're here!" Philip shook me.
"I'm awake! I'm awake!" I informed him. Getting out of the carriage, I felt happy that I got to spend the summer away from the city. I could hear the hypocrisy from miles away. (cakesniffers 😏). In cities such as New York, rumors go around quick and they don't need proof to be told and believed in.
The sun burned bright in my eyes as I was greeted by the slaves that worked at my father's house. I'm very against slavery, even though I was raised in a slave owning household. And my mother came out of the house and was running towards me. She embraced me in a hug.
"My daughter, I haven't seen you in a while." She laughed.
"I'm sorry that we haven't came to visit sooner. It was Philip's birthday last week." I informed her.
"Ah, Philip! Happy Birthday." She gave him a package.
He unwrapped it to find a box. He opened the box to find a journal and a bottle of ink and quill. "Thank you, grandma!" He hugged her. I remember my journal, which I've brought with me. I still write in it and tell it my feelings and all that (Author: September 1st, 1989. lol I had to put that).
"Anything for you Philip." She smiled. "Let's go inside. We can have some tea and chat."
We went inside after retrieving our suitcases. "You can sleep in your old bedroom." Mom informed me.
"Thank you for letting us stay the whole summer." I thanked her.
"It's no problem, really. I enjoy the company." Mom rambled.
"Children, why don't you go put your stuff in the room?" I offered.
"Sure thing mama." Philip went up the stairs with Angelica as Mom went to go show them the room. I followed them up the stairs to my old bedroom.
"This used to be your mom's bedroom." Mom informed them.
"Wow!" Philip looked around with Angelica. I went to my old desk and looked in the drawer. I found old letters from the time I tried writing a letter to Alexander about my mom naming her tomcat after him. I found other letters from Alexander and the Schuyler sisters, and more. I smiled at the letters as I slightly blushed, reading one of Alexander's love letters.

The sun was setting as I heard the door close. I put my tea down and rushed to the door to see that dad was home.
"Y/n! So glad you're here!" Right when he did that, Angelica and Philip came along and tackled father to the ground.
"Grandpa, how was your day as the president?" Philip asked.
"It was great kiddo." Dad replied.
"One day, I'm gonna be a secretary like daddy." Philip confirmed.
"Haha, you have to work hard to achieve it. But don't work too hard." Dad advised.
"I wanna get a scholarship to King's College like Daddy." Philip stared.
"Y/n, my grandkid came out just like Alexander, what did you do?" He joked.
"Well, I taught him." I assured my father.
"Ah, you see Philip and Angelica, your father may be a smart guy, but your mother is just as smart as him and she didn't have to go to college for that!" He explained.
"And mommy's teaching me how to read and write!" Angelica stated.
"See? You can be just as smart as her." Dad exclaimed.

I put the kids to sleep. After a long day with traveling and all that, the kids were really tired. They slept on my old bed as I had a candle and I found my old stationary kit and started writing.
My Dearest, Alexander,
Today was a great day! But I already miss you. Listen, a week ago. It was your son's birthday and I asked him what he wanted for his birthday. He said he wanted to go to school. Can you send me back a letter so we can discuss which school to put him in? How is everything?
Love,
Y/n HamiltonI blew out the candle and changed into my nightgown. I got into bed and went to sleep.
