Rollan's PoV -It was early in the morning just before school started, I sat in the cafeteria talking with my friends waiting for the bell to ring to go to class. I mostly sat quietly, for once, listening to my friends chatter. I was watching people, more importantly the invisible numbers that floated above their head ranking them on a 1 to 10 scale of how 'dangerous' they were to me.
I had met a lot of 1s in my life, mostly younger kids, most teenage people average about a 3 to 4. The highest number I had ever seen was a 7 when I was walking down a dark street at night, I meet a man there, well let's just say the moment I seen that 7 I turned and ran, probably saving my life. I have thankfully never seen a 10, I couldn't imagine what a 10 would be like.
People's numbers never changed, from the moment I meet people I know exactly what they are capable of. I've had this talent for as long as I could remember. I had gotten use to it but I always wondered if there we others like me, with the ability to see through people's lies and personas. I mostly kept my ability a secret, only a few close friends of mine knew but even at that I think they think I'm lying.
I was awoke from my thoughts by the loud ringing of a bell. My friends and I stood and made our way to class, history was my first class, so I turned to walk down the history and English hall telling my friends that I would see them later. I took my seat and got my books out, I waited patiently for the class to begin, history was my favorite class besides P.E. so I actually paid attention.
Soon the teacher walked in greeting us with a good morning and turning on the projector at the same time. I started to jot down the notes when a office aid walked into our class waiting for the teachers permission to speak. With a nod for our teacher the upper classman read for a list of names, "hmmm, Rollan, the principal wants to see you in his office," with that the aid left and I stood grabbing my supplies and headed for the office leaving my classmates to whisper about what I could have possibly got in trouble for.
I hurried down the hall, trying to put my supplies back into my bag as I went. Finning there I knocked on the principal's door waiting for a "come in" before I entered. The principle sat behind his desk, with a 5 floating above his head and papers scattered across his desk top. There was a new student sitting across from him, as I always do with new students I check and remember the number above their head. I glanced above the boy's head trying to look nonchalant, which didn't work to well for me, my eyes widened and I almost screamed when I noticed his 10. "Rollan, this is Devin Trunswick," the principal explained, "he's a new student here and I would like for you to guide him from class to class, I made sure he has the same schedule as you."
I simply nodded in response, still in shock that this boy was a number 10! "H-hello, nice to m-meet you, D-Devin," I stuttered in fear as I reached my hand out for him to shake.
"Nice to meet you too, Rollan," Devin shoot my hand politely.
"Well you two get along okay, Rollan be sure to help Devin out," the principal interrupted us, "now get back to class, the both of you!"
Devin followed me out the door and back into the hall, I was afraid to be alone with him in the empty halls. As we walked I pointed out different classes till we got back to history class. Our teacher assigned Devin a seat right behind me, of course. There was only a few minutes left, not enough time to take notes, I would get them from somebody later.
The bell rang and Devin and I had art. Luckily in that class I didn't have to sit right next to him but I was sure to make a point off looking at his artwork, no it wasn't the bloody gore that you would think a murder would draw. Somehow I felt relieved by this but there was no way I could ever trust a number 10. School went on and Devin still didn't show any signs to be worried about.
We had P.E. after lunch so just a few minutes before the bell I snuck off to the locker room to spend some time alone, surely Devin could find his way to the locker room on his own. I went to my locker and fumbled with the combination, I was terrible at opening locks, finally I got it as I heard the locker room door open. "Rollan, I seen you walk in here," this was Devin's voice, "I need to talk to you."
Finally he rounded the corner where my locker was located. "Errr, okay, what?" I replied slight scared as I stared at the 10 over his head.
"Why do you look at me the way you do or stare above my head with a terrified expression on your face?" Devin asked seemingly upset.
"Your a 10!" is all I replied.
"I'm a what?" He asked.
"Your dangerous to me, somehow," I had to tell him, "I can look over people's heads and see a rank of how dangerous the are on a scale of 1 to 10, your the only ten I've ever seen."
"Oh, Rollan, I would never hurt you," he walked closer to me and I shook in fright, "I don't want to scare you!"
I actually believe him, he seemed so upset. He hugged me gently and I hugged back. "I'm sorry, Devin, do you even believe me about the numbers?"
"Yes, of course I believe you but I don't know why I have to be a ten," he was crying now so I squeezed him tighter into our hug.
"Devin, seeing you like this, well you just don't seem dangerous, I'll ignore your 10 from now on," I smiled at him feeling sorry for poor Devin but somehow I liked how vulnerable he seemed.
"You mean it!" Devin sniffled.
"Yes..." I rubbed his back gently, trying to calm him.
We went through the rest of the day, I felt closer to Devin and I even stared to treat him more like a friend. Days turned in to weeks and I was starting to feel something more towards Devin. Since we had the same classes we got to be together a lot which I was starting to like. Even now that Devin knew his way around the school we still walked together and did group work together.
The bell had just rang for lunch and Devin and I hurried out of our math class. "Hey, Rollan, do you want to go somewhere for lunch today?" Devin offered.
"Sure," I smiled at him.
With that we walked to the parking lot and Devin showed me his car. I got in the passenger side and Devin sat behind the wheel but he didn't start the car yet. "Rollan, I need to talk to you about something," Devin started, "I don't know how to say this but I feel something for you, Rollan, I think I like you."
My mind was racing, did Devin just admit he was gay for me?! "I love you to, Devin!" I smiled at him and leaned forward and planted a kiss on his lip, a moment later he kissed back.
The two of us broke away for air a moment later.
"Now I know why your a 10!" I exclaimed happily, "You hold my heart, Devin!"
Devin just smiled and kissed me again!
