Karmo's PoV -

"YEAH RIGHT, LIKE EVERYTHING YOU SAY IS ALWAYS CORRECT, I'M LEAVING," I stormed out the door, slamming it shut behind me.

Devin and I had gotten into one of our fights, they didn't last long but when they happened, which was often, we always said things we didn't mean. I hurt him and he hurt me. That's how it worked. We both just had bad tempers.

I wondered around The Torch and made my way to my favorite hiking trail. A nice walk in the woods usually calmed me down, I could feel the arcs of angry electricity flying from my skin. I hated when I got mad, mostly because I tended to shock everything.

The trees covered the trail so it looked darker than what it really was outside. It was late in the evening and the sun was setting, casting its last few rays of light for the day. I continued my wondering knowing I should head back soon but not wanting to go back to fighting with Devin. Then down the trail I saw a orange-ish pearl white gleam. I walked towards the tiny thing wanting to know what it was. I looked down at the small object... an egg.

It must have fallen out of its nest. I picked the small egg up and held it. It had survived its fall. He's a fighter. What should I do with him? I looked up at the nest and flew closer to get a better look. A mama bird sat in the nest surrounded by the egg's brother and sister but they were already hatched. Little pips escaped the tiny birds' beaks. The mama bird glared daggers at me, daring me to try and hurt her babies. I held the small egg out to her but she didn't seem to care for it. She hopped onto my hand and started pecking at the poor egg. I flicked the mama bird away, she was trying to kill her own child. I flew down with the uninjured egg. "Looks like its you and me now," I sighed as I cuddled the egg with my wings.

I couldn't just leave him to die, he couldn't live without warmth and someone to take care of him. I walked back home hoping Devin wouldn't still be mad.

I cradled the egg in my wings trying to keep it warm from the cool night. What if the egg was already gone? What if there was nothing to save? Negative and depressing thoughts filled my head. No, this egg would make it. I knew he was alive but I don't know how I knew that. Finally, we made it back to The Torch. I entered Devin's and my house. I was glad I wasn't greeted with more yelling. Devin lay asleep in his bed, I couldn't help but smile at his adorableness.

I scurried around our house trying to find things to make a nest for the egg. I couldn't find anything so I just lay in bed next to Devin with the egg cradled in my wings.

I woke to Devin's adorable face next to me. He was smiling so I guess that meant our fighting was over, for now anyway. "An egg... really," Devin yawns.

I look down at the orange-ish egg that was still cradled in my wings. "I found him last night," I replied to Devin.

Devin playfully ruffled my hair, "You're such a bird."

As he stood I grabbed his tail, Devin spun around hissing at me. "And you're such a cat," I cooed.

Devin trudged off mumbling to himself. I inspected the egg for any signs of a newborn bird but there wasn't as much as a single crack. I picked the egg up and dug around in the closet till I found an old t-shits and some craft pop sickle sticks. I took the egg to the table and quickly made a makeshift nest. I had never made one before but somehow the bird side of me knew. I placed the egg inside the nest where he would be safe while I made breakfast for Devin and myself.

Minutes later Devin, the egg, and I sat at the table eating pancakes. Well the egg wasn't eating. "So what kind of bird will he be?" Devin asked.

I studied the egg before replying, "I have no idea, it was dark so I didn't get a good look at his mom."

"You stole and egg from a mother bird!" Devin gasped.

"No, I tried to give him back but she tried to kill her own son," I protectively pulled the egg closer.

Devin simply nodded in reply.

Days went by and there was still no sign of life from the egg. I was starting to worry for him. I was starting to doubt my own egg parenting skills. His brother and sister had already hatched apparently fairly long before the egg. What if he really was a goner?

Devin must have noticed this, he warped his arms around me, "You're doing your best."

I cuddled Devin under one wing and held the egg with the other, "Thanks, Dev."

Just then the egg moved a little. "Devin, he moved!" I smiled holding the egg close to get a better look.

Devin watched over my shoulder. I placed the egg in his nest. Devin and I watched as a small crack formed in the eggs shell. I hugged Devin and I caught some tears running down my face. My egg was safe! He was about to hatch! A few more crack appeared and started to spread. Then finally a little bird head peaked through. The cracks was just wide enough that the rest of the baby bird could climb through. He fell into his nest, seemingly exhausted. He let out a few small pips. The baby bird stared at Devin and I, mostly me. Then the bird kinda gasped and I felt worry begin to overtake my joy. More gasps followed. His cute pips were replaced by gasps for air. Devin glanced at me with worry. I hurried over to the baby bird not knowing what to do. I placed a finger over his tiny heart, I felt his heart beat its last beat. My own heart broke. I didn't even know when I started sobbing. Devin took me in his arms, he was crying too. I had failed the poor bird. Who was I if I couldn't even keep a little egg alive. Devin rubbed my back trying to comfort me but the egg was like my child. My adopted child. I had kept him alive and brought him into this world but he still died. I couldn't speak or breathe. I was hyperventilating as sobs escaped my throat.

Then I felt a peck on my ear. I turned to see what happened and was greeted by the cute face of a tiny fiery bird. I looked over at where my baby bird had taken his last breath but all that lay in the nest was singed egg shells and a bird sized pile of ash. Devin was oblivious so I nudged him. He looked up seeing the baby phoenix. His tears stopped and he smiled, "Congratulations, Karmo..."

The baby phoenix cuddled into my wing but his fire didn't hurt me at all. "Welcome to the family, Egg!" I smiled down at my little Egg.
