This is a modern AU and I based this story off the song "The Mute" by Radical Face
---------Dawson's PoV -
I sat listening to everyone's talking, wishing I could participate. Instead I played the shy boy, though I really wasn't, it was easier than being asked questions or complimented on things you couldn't answer. A side effect of being mute was loving books, not only did constant reading prevent people from talking to me but a book spoke without talking, unlike movies or music. In a way I was like a book, I couldn't tell you to give me a chance but I have a feeling I could be a good friend if someone just gave me a try. Till then I would stair down at the words. I would read the story that was meant to be read.
"Hey, there, what're you reading?" I looked up to see a Nilonian boy about my age, he had that look on his face, the I'm-waiting-on-you-to-say-something-look, I hated that look.
I smiled at him so he wouldn't think I was ignoring him. This next part was the most awkward, "I'm reading To Kill A Mocking Bird," I signed to him, he would probably get the hint that I was mute and awkwardly smile and walk away, not knowing what I had just said.
"I love that book," he signed back and I swear my mouthed dropped open in amazement, he knew sign language!
"You know sign language!" I said back excitedly, "I'm Dawson by the way."
He chuckled a little, it was kinda cute, "Kirat," he smiled,"yeah, I know it," he spoke out loud, "do you want to go do something?"
I smiled, did someone actually want to hang out with me? "Sure," I said with my hands, "Where to?"
"Where ever, how about the bookstore?" Kirat replied.
I nodded and smiled. I stood from my place on the park bench, taking my book with me, we walked to the closest bookstore. We talked a little on the way and though I was thrilled about finally finding someone who knew sign language, I couldn't help but wonder if other people thought it was odd that only one of us were talking. I've never had to think that before so I guess that was a good problem to have.
Finally, we made I to the book store. Though this was a fairly large city, this wasn't a very busy place, I had come to this store once or twice before. I immediately headed for the 9 - 12 year old books though I was 14 years old. Kirat followed me and began browsing the shelf next to me. "Oh, this is a good book, have you read it?" Kirat asked in a whisper as he held up some book titled Wild Born.
"No, but I've heard about it before, it sounds cool," I replied.
Kirat smiled and tucked the book under his arm, we continued looking at shelf after shelf for at least an hour. I of course found lots of books I wanted but I left them all on the shelf since I didn't have any money. Kirat had found a book or two of his own. Finally, we made it to the check out. "Did you not find any books you wanted?" Kirat asked.
"Yeah but I'm poor," I silently laughed.
"I'll buy them for you, I don't mind," Kirat smiled and when he seen me staring to sign 'no thanks' he insisted, "I want to, father gives me too much money every week anyway."
I smiled an anxious smile at him and led him over to all the books I had seen that looked interesting. Kirat picked them up and took them to the check out once again. Kirat was just to kind, he not only bought me books but he carried both of our loads of books. I wanted to hug him. We walked around the town for awhile. Mostly we window shopped, only every once in a while going into a store that looked interesting.
