-----Conor's PoV -
"You got this, Abeke," I shoot Abeke a comforting smile.
"Thanks but you have got to help me out," Abeke worries as we wait in her Kia Soul outside Orangeleaf which is apparently a great place to pick up chicks, according to Abeke.
"That's kinda my job," Abeke and I exit her car and head inside for froyo.
Inside it's cool and smells sweet. Man do I love this place. The tables and booths are reasonably busy for being late in the evening, couples sit and talk over froyo, college students hang out in their groups, I scan everyone. I notice two students about Abeke's and my age sitting together. I originally thought they were dating but then I saw a small lesbian flag pin on the girls book bag. Oh, Abeke needs to talk to her!
Abeke leads me to the yogurt machines that line the wall allowing you to pick from a large variety of flavors. I grab my bowl and get plain vanilla. Abeke decides on raspberry. We move down the line to the toppings. Abeke doses her bowl with chocolate chips and raspberries. The toppings are my favorite so I deck my bowl out with gummy bears, sour gummy worms, blackberries, and Oreos. We take our bowls to the cashier, they weigh the bowls to see how much we owe. It's pretty expensive but I pay for Abeke's, much to her disdain, because I'm the best wingman there is. We grab our sweets and Abeke looks to me, silently asking where we should sit. I motion with my eyes to the lesbian girl I saw earlier. Her and her friend sit at the bar next to the window. The bar is small and only holds four, Abeke leads, "Could we sit next to you?"
The lesbian girl smiles, "Sure."
Abeke sits next to the girl and I sit next to Abeke and the wall. "You musty really like raspberry," the other girl smiles, noticing Abeke's raspberry yogurt decked with loads of raspberries on top.
It's obvious Abeke's nervous, "Yeah, they're the best... you're one to talk, really, peanuts on mint chocolate chip."
"Don't hate it if you've never tried it," this is going well, they're laughing, "Oh by the way I'm Meilin and this is my friend Rollan," Meilin smiles.
"I'm Abeke this is my friend Conor," Abeke states and I give a half hearted head nod.
I glance over at Rollan when Meilin introduces him and I'm blown away. Rollan's incredibly handsome, he looks a little older than me. Maybe by a year or two but I'm taller. My face heats up after I realize I was starting for a bit too long.
I feel segregated, Abeke is talking with Meilin and everything seems to be going well but it's just me and the wall over here. I eat my frozen yogurt in silence then when it's gone I don't know what to do so I just distract myself on my phone. "Hey..." I feel a small tap on my shoulder.
I spin around, "Oh, hey... Rollan, right?" I know his name, I memorize all cute guy's names, but I have to be nonchalant.
"Yeah, Conor?" Rollan's smile is beautiful.
"That's me."
"The girls seem to be doing okay on their own, I guess they don't need us wingmen after all, want to go do something?" Rollan must have been just as board as I was.
I try not to sound too eager, "Yeah, sounds great."
With that we leave Abeke and Meilin to themselves. The small bell above the door tings when we leave. There's a park next door so Rollan and I wonder over to it. He sits down on a swing and I do the same. It's dark out and we're the only ones around. "So you're Meilin's wingman?" I ask.
"Yeah, it's kinda obvious, we're just there to make conversation if need be but they seemed to be getting along just fine on their own," Rollan's voice is perfect.
We're both swinging now, racing each other higher into the sky. At the peak of his swing Rollan jumps off and gracefully lands. Woah.
"You try it now, Conor," Rollan's standing to the side of my swing.
I'm still swinging back and forth with vigor, I try to slow myself down, "No, that's too scary," I can practically hear how lame I sound.
"You can do it..." Rollan encourages, "Chicken..."
"Hey, rude!"
Rollan's laughing at my fear now, it's not mean hearted but I want to prove myself.
I'm still going pretty fast, not as high as when Rollan jumped but not bad. I take a deep breath and when my swing is at its peak I jump. I don't land gracefully like Rollan, I fall to the ground, one leg overlapping the other. Pain shoots up my left ankle, I shake it off and try to stand but it hurts too bad so I sit back down on the ground. I want to cry, it hurts, but I won't allow myself to cry in front of Rollan. "Conor... You okay?" Rollan walks over too me, he sits down next to me, "Sorry, I shouldn't have pressured you to jump."
I try to smile through the pain, play it off like it doesn't hurt, "It's fine, doesn't really hurt."
"I can see tears in your eyes," Rollan continues, "let me help you up."
Rollan tries to help me to my feet but I still can't stand, it hurts to bad. I'm trying and failing at keeping tears from falling down my face. Rollan gently sits me back down, he immediately picks me up bridal style. My arms instinctively wrap around his neck. He carries me out of the park and back to Orangeleaf. Abeke and Meilin are chilling on the tailgate of a truck in Orangeleaf's parking lot. They're waiting on us, "Wow, Rollan, that was fast," Meilin smirks.
"What... no, Conor just hurt his ankle and couldn't walk," Rollan nervously replies, I just hang there in his arms awkwardly.
Rollan hops up on the tailgate too with me still in his arms. We all chat for awhile, mostly Abeke and Meilin talk and Rollan and I talk. My ankle starts to feel better but it's still a little sore. Finally, when Orangeleaf closes for the night Rollan helps me into Abeke's Kia. While the girls are busy saying their good byes, Rollan kisses me. It's a quick kiss then we both stare back at each other not quite knowing what to say. I decided to break the silence, "I had fun with you tonight."
"Me too, maybe we can do it again sometime, without the girls," Rollan smiles.
Then Abeke gets in her car and Rollan says good bye and shuts the door for me. "Sooo... It seems like you and Rollan were getting along well," Abeke smirks.
"Maybe... You and Meilin seemed to like each other quite a bit, I'm a pretty good wingman if I do say so myself," I tease Abeke.
"Oh, shut up!"
Abeke and I both laugh, it was a good night for everyone. Who knew Orangeleaf was the place to find dates...
