Shane's PoV -
It started out like any other day. I met up with Karmo and Devin on the way to school. I was the only one of us that had a car so we carpooled to school. The drive was pretty far but that just meant we got to listen to more songs before school. Devin sat in the passenger seat and Karmo sat in the backseat. The three of us talked over the music. I was driving fast soaring down the highway since we were running a little late for school. I slowed and stopped at the four way and started to make my turn right when another car zoomed around a curb. The driver must have not been paying attention and completely skipped the stop without slowing at all. Devin and Karmo screamed and I swerved but I was too late. The car hit the drives side and all I can remember is the intensity of the pain then the darkness that consumed me.
Moments later I opened my eyes and checked to see if Devin and Karmo were okay. I wiggled my way out of the debris of my car to find Karmo laying on a cot and Devin standing next to him crying. I ran up to them and was glad to find Karmo alive but his legs looked broken. Devin just sported a few cuts and bruises. Both Devin and Karmo were crying. Then I seen the body bag with some medics standing over it. I walked over to the bag and group of medics to see my face staring back at me. I had blood dripping down my face and glass pierced my neck and forehead. I looked bad... it took a moment for me to realize... I'm dead. I screamed in fear at this recognition but no one looked my way. I was a ghost.
Next thing I knew I heard Devin's yelling and more sobs. Apparently the man that killed me had lived and was now arguing with Devin who kept sobbing, "You killed Shane..."
I walked over to Devin and wrapped him in a hug but he was unfazed and kept on crying and yelling. "Devin... I'm right here...," I cuddled him hoping he could hear me but he couldn't.
A cop pulled Devin and the other driver apart before their argument became physical. Karmo and Devin were both loaded into the ambulance so I quickly joined them before the ambulance doors were shut. Moments later we were speeding away.
Once at the hospital Karmo was rushed off to the ER and Devin was taken in for a quick inspection to make sure there wasn't any internal bleeds that weren't visible. I followed Karmo.
Once Karmo was taken to a room and laid on a cot nurses and doctors began swarming around him. I stayed out of the way even though a ghost really couldn't be in the way. A ghost... was that what I am now? I shivered at the thought.
An hour or so passed and the medical staff had left Karmo to himself. I of course stayed with him. Karmo was in pretty bad pain, obviously. He had broken both his legs but they could be repaired, it would just take some time. In the meantime Karmo was bored, in pain, and depressed over the loss of me. I watched over his should as he pulled out his phone and text Devin over our group chat.
R u still in the hospital?
Yep, just need to sign some papers and I'll be let go. I'll come visit before I leave.
Devin replied.
Thanks
Karmo replied before tiredly laying his phone on his chest and closing his eyes.
I reached over for his phone absentmindedly out of boredom and wanting something to do. My hand went through it but not like with other objects I had tried to touch. With this phone my hand dispersed into series of 1s and 0s. I turned to code. Not having anything better to do with my after life I allowed my body to turn to code as I was sucked into Karmo's phone.
I must have blanked out. When I opened my eyes everything was electric blue and blinding. I had materialized back into my ghost form I assume and I could move freely in the void. It was like being behind the scenes in a phone. I knew what I wanted to do first so I hurried over to the messenger app.
I just want you guys to know I'm sorry for everything that happened today.
I sent the text to Devin, Karmo, and my group chat.
Devin, how did u do that. This isn't funny.
Karmo's text dings.
It wasn't me, I swear.
Devin's text came next.
They don't think it's actually me. I can't blame them after what happened today.
It's really me, Shane!
I hurriedly text before Karmo and Devin could start fighting.
How?
They both sent the same text at once. At least they were starting to believe me.
I don't know how but I'm like a ghost or something. I got sucked into Karmo's phone.
Neither of them text for awhile after that and I was starting to panic. What if I scared them away? Finally, a new text came through.
Wow...
Was Devin's reply.
Can we somehow help you?
Karmo asked but I didn't have an answer. As far as I knew there was nothing I could do to... become human again. At least in Karmo's phone I could talk to Devin and Karmo. That was at least something I could do and I wasn't feeling quite so lonely anymore.
No... I don't think so.
I sent back.
-Time Skip-
After that life went on. I wasn't too bored or lonely. Devin and Karmo talked to me all the time and I was always happy to respond. I had tried to leave the phone a few times but as far as I could tell I was trapped in here. It was a one way in no way out kind of thing but that was okay with me. I could still talk to Devin and Karmo and I felt close to them if not closer than we had ever been. Life or rather afterlife would be okay.
