Rollan's PoV -
It had taken years to get to this place in my life. I had two best friends, Shane and Devin. I was doing pretty good in school. I was happy for the most part. Then things started to shift and pieces to the puzzle of my life began to slip out of place.
My first clue was when Devin started hanging out with this boy named Conor. Everyone could see it coming from a mile away and of course they became boyfriends. Luckily I didn't feel too awkward since Shane also didn't have a boyfriend or girlfriend. As always there was troubles in adding Conor to our group. Devin wouldn't be around as much as he once had since he spent the majority of his time with Conor.
I'm not saying Conor is a bad kid because he is far from it but some of his friends weren't the best. Conor would take Devin to parties with drugs and alcohol. At first Devin didn't participate but after enough parties he was just as drunk or high as all the others.
It was hard for me to see all this at the time. Conor was nice to me and Devin was still there a lot but looking back the sign were all there. About this time Devin lost his innocents which once again made me feel inferior. I admit it is on me for letting myself feel that way but it hurt deep down. I felt like I had to get on Devin's level to remain friends.
Then Devin got a new job and that's when I really began to notice his shift. Devin basically left Shane and I all together. He hung out with Conor and his coworkers, leaving no time for Shane or I. Even when Devin was around he still wasn't the Devin that I had come to know. He seemed a lot more sad, maybe even depressed. He was more dramatic and Conor and him would argue a lot but Devin would always stay with him. I wanted to help him and I tried.
One day I walked up to Devin, since he had recently left our table at lunch. I approached the topic as gently as I could, "Devin, you haven't been around as much lately and I was worried I said something to hurt your feelings."
I know I asked but that was just a way to bring up the conversation. I knew deep down that I hadn't offended Devin in anyway but of course if there is a way to toss blame, he did it, "Well our table at lunch was just depressing and I couldn't handle it so I left."
I knew for a fact that our table was just as normal as ever, for the most part, and if anyone was depressing then it was Devin. I was a little ticked off but I had to play it off cool. "Yeah, that's fine," I awkwardly stated in the most unemotional voice I could muster.
I knew then and there that that was my goodbye to Devin as my friend. He didn't really want to make things work even after I repeatedly reached out to him. I just kinda gave up. I would give him the time of day if need be but the rest was history. It hurt. Devin left me for the popular kids and for his boyfriend. Then he had the nerve to blame that all on me, saying I was 'depressing'.
I though that was all the events with Devin. Shane and I were doing just fine without him. We were no longer a trio but that was okay. Our lunch table was less sad, no matter what Devin said. We helped each other out with our classes. We even became better friends. We would go over to each other's house almost everyday to watch Game of Thrones or Riverdale. We clung to each other for hope during these rough times with Devin.
