A/N -
Well guys, this is my Thanksgiving special since I didn't write a Halloween one like I originally planed on.
Happy Thanksgiving!
--------------Conor's PoV -
"Please, master Devin, I don't want to leave Eura, all my family are here and my dogs and sheep, I can't leave that all behind," I pleaded to Devin, he wanted me to go on some long journey with him and his family, as his indentured servant I kinda had to do what he said.
"Conor, I'm sorry but you have to, if it was up to me we wouldn't be going in the first place but dad is making us, besides, Amaya seems cool," Devin explained for the hundredth time, "Dad said there is a lot of money to be made over there, after your indenture is over you can even make money to go back home if you still want to," he finally shut up.
"But that's at least four years away," I complained.
Devin just shrugged and continued packing his bags. I was allowed one small bag of my own but with the small amount I owned, it was good enough. I sighed seeing that our conversation wasn't going to go any farther, I left to finish some final chores before leaving Eura forever.
After I finished my chores, I had just enough time to write my family a goodbye letter. I sent it off right as the Trunswicks were leaving their manor. "Hurry up, Conor, we haven't got all day, we can't miss our boat!" Devin's mother complained and I hurriedly grabbed my things and joined the family.
They hailed a carriage and we all climbed in, this took us to the docks where a large ship waited to board all of its passengers. There were so many people crowding around the dock already but they all parted to let the Earl and his family load the ship. I was to sleep on the floor while the others slept in cleaner and warmer beds. I laid my stuff down on my makeshift bed. Devin and Dawson had wandered off to explore so I went to find them.
I found them leaning over the side of the ship watching the waves hit the side of the boat. "How long will this trip take?" I asked Devin.
"Oh, probably a month or two, depending on the weather," Devin replied, "but this really is a sturdy ship with a great captain so we have nothing to worry about."
I nearly fainted, a whole month, stuck on a boat, with Devin Trunswick and his family! I should probably get use to being bossed around. Then the boat launched, starting its long journey to the new world of Amaya, there was no turning back now.
We had been on board this ship for over a week now. Everyone was starting to get really grumpy and smelly. The living conditions kept getting worse and worse. We didn't have much to eat, especially us indentured servants, beside stale bread and a little meat. I spent nearly all day doing chores and at night I barely slept thanks to all the mice onboard. Luckily it wasn't all bad though, my relationship with Devin has been getting some better, he was still rather grumpy though but he would often hide some of his food to give to me later and a few times he even let me sleep in his bed, well away from all the rats. I was starting to like him.
Days passed so slowly, even worse our ship encountered a huge storm. The waves beat at our ship but luckily Devin was right and this boat was sturdy. Nearly everyone was sea sick and the sails were reeled up, meaning we weren't traveling anywhere too fast or too soon.
Finally after 66 days we spotted land. Devin happened to be standing by me so I hugged him and we danced happily for a bit. His mother, father, and sister had gotten sick on the ride over so they were bed ridden, meaning Dawson, Devin, and I were supposed to help build our new settlement by ourselves.
Over the days many people started to fall ill, they were immediately taken back to the ship to be taken care of. The rest of us stayed in the single cabin we've built so far. Dawson fell sick and was taken back to the boat with his mom, his sister and father had not survived much longer after we reached shore. Devin started crying as some men took Dawson to the ship, "He's g-gonna die, like f-father and my s-sister, I can't live w-without Dawson!" Devin sobbed.
We sat down to take a little break and I placed Devin's head on my shoulder, I patted his back, "Shhhh, Dawson's strong, he'll fight off that sickness," I tried to reassure Devin but I had to choose my words carefully, it wasn't very likely that Dawson could pull through, none of the others had.
A day or two later a native walked into our camp, the men who had guns aimed them at the newcomer but he simply put his hands up and said, "I come in peace."
He went to meet with our captain and minuets later he left. The settlement said the natives would help us, this was good news for everyone.
The next day a native boy showed up at camp. Surprisingly he spoke English, "I was told your people need our help, my name's Rollan by the way, I'll teach you to hunt if you'd like," Rollan smiled, he always seemed to smile.
"S-sure thanks," Devin said maybe a little nervously.
I simply smiled in return. Rollan gave us each a bow and a few arrows to use, he taught us how to aim and shoot. Once he thought we were ready the three of us left the camp to hunt. We didn't talk as we walked for fear of scaring off our prey. We jumped a deer and Rollan quickly aimed and shot, moments later and the deer was down. "Wow, that was amazing," Devin complimented, all his previous fear gone.
"Yeah, that was cool," I chimed in.
Rollan just flashed a smile in return but his gaze lingered on Devin for a second too long, then he turned and we kept walking.
Day after day, Devin and I went on hunting trips with Rollan. Day after day, I became more and more jealous as Devin gave Rollan more attention than me. Devin and I had been doing so good, he made sure I was taken care of and I gave him moral support and served him without complaining. I though we had something, I was even thinking about staying with him even after my indenture was over. Maybe we could start dating or something, no one would have to know but now, it seemed like he was falling into his old habit of treating me bad. He would yell at me and blame things he did on me. He would sneak off and talk to Rollan for hours on end while I was left to do all the hard work by myself. I hated it! I felt lonely and left out.
I was thankful when Dawson got better and could help me again, I told him all about Rollan and his brother and their possible relationship together. He seemed to see right through me, "I'm sorry, Conor, I know my brother can be a jerk sometimes, he treats the people who care the most about him the worst," Dawson patted my back, "Maybe things will get better, maybe he'll see how he hurt you."
I looked down glumly, "Thanks Dawson."
It was weeks later, our settlement had invited the natives over for dinner, we wanted to thank them for all their help. I knew without Rollan, and the others from his tribe, we probably would have died but I couldn't help but wish we never meet Rollan. He stole Devin from me! When we sat down for dinner, I couldn't help but notice that Rollan and Devin sat next to each other. I had to sit at the servants table, there was only two other servants who had survived the trip. We were often the first to die since we got the short end of the stick when it came to food and proper shelter. It was probably only thanks to Devin that I lived this long. I felt a tear trail down my cheek at this thought, I ran off behind one of the cabins to regain my composure.
Devin's PoV -I watched Conor run away seemingly crying. I felt a twinge in my heart but then I glanced over at Rollan and my heart speed up. Should I stay here with Rollan or should I go help Conor? I thought if I started treating Conor like the servant he was then maybe my decision would be easier but if anything it only made it worse. Every time I yelled at Conor my heart broke, what has that boy done to me?
Finally, I made my decision, I excused myself from the table. I walked behind the nearest cabin where Conor had gone. He sat on the ground with his arms wrapped around his knees. He sobbed. I sat down next to him, "Conor... you okay?" I asked as I rubbed his back.
He looked up, "No, I'm not okay, you treat me horribly, I thought we had made progress," Conor looked almost mad, "I thought there was something between us."
"Conor, I'm so sorry I treated you that way, I regret it," I smiled and then kissed him.
Conor's eyes widened in shock but he kissed back a moment later. "You've been there for me when others weren't, I want you Conor," I kissed him and we ditched the rest of the meal so we could talk together instead.
